Today I would like to introduce the temple bell of Todaiji Temple. It is a temple bell with a very long history that was cast in the same era as the Great Buddha.
This bell is an original from the Nara period when Todaiji was built, and is designated as a national treasure.
There are 14 temple bells designated as national treasures, including those imported from overseas. Among them, Todaiji is the only one where you can actually hear the sound of the bell. In addition, it is considered to be the oldest among the active bells.

Yakushiji Temple Evening Broken Bell
https://youtu.be/U9q5ldx9lsg
This bell, manufactured 1,300 years ago during the Nara period, is an ancient artifact designated as an Important Cultural Property. Its distinctive feature is the large crack seen on its side. It is said to have occurred during the civil unrest of the Muromachi period, and it is affectionately called the "Nishi no Kyo Koware Kane" or "The Broken Bell of the Western Capital."
Despite its cracks, the "Koware Kane" is carefully repaired and still rings every day at 5 p.m., telling the time. You can also watch the live streaming of this event on YouTube. It is a valuable opportunity to experience the beautiful sound of the temple bell and learn about its historical background. I invite you to watch the video and explore the charm of Yakushi-ji Temple and the "Koware Kane," the Broken Bell of the Western Capital in Nara.
