How to interpret, and capture or create an idea as a visual artist can take a lifetime to learn and master. We discuss ways of seeing, techniques, craftsmanship, commercial approach or personal philosophies learned through practice; things that can’t be found in any MFA program.

This show is not aimed at art professionals. That is our primary visual literacy - we can understand and communicate in that style.

Then there are visuals that don’t resonate with us. Our response verbally or internally is something like, “I don’t get it, that does nothing for me.” In these cases; after a creator takes me into their process, I usually find an appreciation for it that I never would have come to on my own. The purpose of visual literacy project is to share those stories in order to expand the art and visuals that we are able to understand and appreciate.

With that in mind, the best way to use these resources would be to watch the interviews where the images don’t immediately excite you. Or maybe the imagery intrigues you but you don’t know why. Let the artists expand your own visual literacy, and possibly yourself and your own art in the process.

Gosha Gibek - Painting With Synesthesia

Watch the Video Interview at https://visualliteracyproject.com/gosha-gibek/

Gosha is a painter. However, not a traditional one. She experiments with paints and different media and really cares about texture and line - sometimes sticking pieces of a string to accentuate the line and bring texture at the same time. A special technique she has developed is dripping a non-drip gloss paint from a palette knife. Gosha does this completely freehand because, "I believe that if I allow the line to take its own life, only then the painting will be free and surprising. I see in colours and have always been blessed with a particular trait: Synesthesia. Synesthesia is a condition that happens when a sense, such as a sight, triggers another sense, like the smell, at the same time. My senses blend one with another: I hear music when looking at colours, smell when listening to music and most oddly: I see words in colours. Thanks to this particular trait I can perfectly capture people in motion or a vibrancy of objects and texture."

Follow this artist:

Visit her gallery in person: GOSH Art Gallery & Studio 20 Castlegate, Clitheroe, BB7 1AZ

Gosha Gibek primary website: www.goshagibek.com

Gosha on Etsy: www.etsy.com/shop/uk/GoshaGibekArt

Gosha on Facebook: www.facebook.com/GoshArtAndDesign

Gosha on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goshartanddesign

Gosha on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPFWKeSSNwYzEOZ1rskhnvw

Gosha on Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.co.uk/GoshArtBrand/cyclists-and-cycling-art-by-gosha-gibek

Scott Norris Photography - A Photo is Only A Starting Point

Video Interview at https://visualliteracyproject.com/scott-norris-photography/

Scott creates emotion, mood and atmosphere with his photographs. Each photo is a very personal journey exposing his own fears, triumphs, beliefs, shortcomings whether working in landscape, still life, architecture or macro. Scott usually shoots spontaneously with the surroundings mostly dictating what is photographed, and shooting is only the first step; it's a jumping off point. Then he takes the raw images, creates what he sees in his mind's eye, coaxing out textures, sometimes adding them, enhancing contrast and lights and darks; creating moods and emotions that he felt and wants you to feel.

Follow this artist:

Scott Norris Photography primary website: http://www.scottnorrisphotography.com/

Scott Norris Art on Fine Art America: https://fineartamerica.com/profiles/scott-norris.html

Scott Norris Photography on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/scottnorrisphotography/

Scott Norris on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/scottnorrisphotography/

Scott Norris on Ello: https://ello.co/scottnorrisphotography

Scott Norris on flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/scottnorrisphotography/

Scott Norris on Twitter: https://twitter.com/snorrisphoto
