Avocado is niet groen: de Mexicaanse avocado handel onderzocht
Avocado’s worden over de hele wereld steeds populairder. Met name Mexico en de Verenigde Staten zijn belangrijke handelspartners als het gaat om avocado’s. Ongeveer driekwart van de avocado-export vanuit Mexico gaat naar de Verenigde Staten. Handel in Mexico is sterk beïnvloed door de North American Free Trade Agreement, oftewel de NAFTA. Dit verdrag is opgesteld door de VS, Mexico en Canada om vrije handel tussen de genoemde landen mogelijk te maken. De Verenigde Staten heeft een grote impact in Mexico op het gebied van milieu, economie, sociale (leef)omstandigheden en op kleine boerenbedrijven door de sterke vraag naar avocado’s. Zo leven miljoenen Mexicaanse mensen leven in armoede, het percentage van werkloosheid is hoger dan in voorgaande jaren en vele kleine familieboerderijen zijn weggevaagd. Het is daarom van groot belang vanuit zowel een sociaal als ecologisch standpunt om de huidige productie, handel en consumptie van de avocado opnieuw te bekijken. Carlijn, onderzoeksjournalist en expert op het gebied van internationale handel vertelt ons in deze aflevering meer over de productie van de avocado in Mexico en de handel met de Verenigde Staten, vanuit het oogpunt als voorstander van de voedsel-soevereiniteit beweging.
