#11 Plant science taking center stage

In the eleventh episode we focus on the highly relevant topic of "science communication". In the first part, we offer exclusive impressions of the "KWS Science Slam 2024". This annual internal KWS event invites employees to present complex topics in their field in an entertaining and accessible way to their colleagues. In the selected excerpts, Svenja Bänsch, Roland Schwarzenbacher, Natalja Beying and Manny Saluja talk about topics as diverse as genome editing, plant defense mechanisms - and the eventful life of the cabbage-stem flea beetle Oli. In the second part of the episode, we talk to an expert who knows a thing or two about communicating complex plant science topics: David Spencer is a molecular biologist, science slammer, author and influencer. In the podcast, he talks about his fascination with science slams, the importance of science communication, the "superpowers" of plants, and the role of genetic engineering for sustainable agriculture.

#10 Similar in nature but not in detail – entering the vegetable business

The world of vegetables is not only quite fascinating, vegetables are also very healthy. The WHO recommends eating at least 400g of fruit and vegetables a day. What's more, Vegetables are key to an environmentally friendly diet. Accordingly, vegetables and thus also seeds for vegetables play a growing economic role all over the world. Reason enough for KWS to further diversify its portfolio and become part of this market. In 2019, the company announced its entry into the vegetable market – on the one hand with the acquisition of the Dutch company Pop Vriend, leading in spinach seed, and on the other with the long-term, organic development of a new business unit with various vegetable crops. How do you develop a business unit from scratch? How does vegetable breeding differ from other areas in which KWS is active? And what traits are particularly relevant for customers along the value chain? Together with Simon Walter and Coert Engels we explore these and other questions. Simon Walter joined KWS as Head of Business Development Corn in 2019. After various management roles he moved into his current role as Head of the newly founded Vegetables Business Unit in mid of 2023. Coert Engels started at KWS in the same year. As Global Head of Breeding Vegetables he is responsible for the breeding strategy and the breeding departments and farm organizations in the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Turkey, Mexico and Brazil.

#9 Im Wettlauf mit dem Klimawandel – was moderne Pflanzenzüchtung leisten kann und was nicht

Der Klimawandel wird nicht nur kommen, er findet längst statt. Der IPCC geht bis zum Jahr 2100 von einem mittleren globalen Temperaturanstieg zwischen 1,8 und 4,0 Grad Celsius aus. Schon jetzt häufen sich die Meldungen über Temperaturen von über 40 Grad im April in Spanien, trockene Flusstäler und Talsperren in Frankreich, Überflutungen in Italien. Die Landwirtschaft kann einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Begrenzung des Klimawandels leisten, gleichzeitig ist sie von dessen Auswirkungen im hohen Maße direkt betroffen, denken wir an mögliche Ernteverluste und damit die verfügbare Menge, den Preis, aber auch die Qualität unserer Nahrung. Wie werden unsere Nutzpflanzen, Obst, Gemüse, das Klima der Zukunft verkraften? Wie kann man ihre Widerstandsfähigkeit stärken? Oder müssen wir in der Landwirtschaft umdenken und ganz andere Produkte anbauen? Darüber reden wir jetzt im Podcast „World of Farming“ und haben dazu zwei sehr versierte und erfahrene Gäste aus den Bereichen Züchtung und Produktentwicklung bei KWS zu Gast. Dr. Milena Ouzunova ist seit Ende der 90er Jahre bei KWS tätig. Seit 2009 ist sie als „Leiterin Angewandte Züchtungstechnologien für Mais und Ölfrüchte“ für ein Team aus 60 Forscherinnen und Forschern verantwortlich. Harold Verstegen verfügt über 20 Jahre Erfahrung in verschiedenen, internationalen Führungspositionen in der Life Science Industrie. Seit 2021 leitet er die Globale Produktentwicklung für Zuckerrüben, Getreide, Sonderkulturen und Ökosaatgut bei KWS.
