担忧人工智能失控的人会为这种可能性惴惴不安，因为如果我们与机器协同进化，那么事情实际上并不受人类控制。但缺乏掌控并不意味着人类会被消灭或者奴役，因为这一过程同样不是机器能掌控的。能动性在进化的过程中没有用武之地；细菌进化出抗生素耐药性既不以人的意志为转移，也不是出于它自己的主观能动性。虽然机器至少目前尚未表现出类似能动性的特征，但它们的确参与了自身的发展过程，这一点几乎跟生物是一样的。
