بعدَ أن شاهدَ الخليفةُ الرشيدُ الثلاثةَ في القصرِ يتسامرون، قررَ الاِنضمامَ إليهم بعدَ أن خلَبَهُ صوْتُ أنيسِ الجليسِ وعزْفُها على العود، ودخَلَ إليهم في هيئةِ صيادٍ يَبيعُ لهُمُ السمك، وبعدَ وقتٍ مِنَ المسامرةِ بينَه وبينهم، أدركَ الثلاثةُ حقيقةَ الخليفةِ الذي أكرمَهُم وعلِمَ بأمْرِ عليْ نورِ الدين، فكتبَ جوابـاً للسلطانِ الزيني يأمُرُ بعزْلِهِ، لكنَّ ابنَ ساوي حاولَ أن يَحولُ دونَ ذلك.

يصلُ عليّْ نورُ الدينِ وزوجتُه أنيسُ الجليسِ لبغداد، ويسيران فيها حتى يجِدا أنفُسَهُما أمامَ بستانٍ بديعٍ داخلَهُ قصرٌ يَتْبَعُ خليفةَ المسلمين هارونَ الرشيد، ويدخُلاه ويستَريحا فيه حتى يغلِبَهُما النوم. يقبِضُ عليهِما البستانيُّ، الشيخُ إبراهيم، لكنه يَرْفُقُ بهما، ويجلِسُ الثلاثةُ خِلسةً داخلَ القصر، حتى يكتشِفَ الخليفةُ ووزيرُه جعفرٌ البرمكيُّ أمرَهم.

وَدُّ الملِكُ الزينيُّ، حاكِمُ البصرة، الزواجَ مِنِ امرأةٍ فاتنة، ويأمُرُ وزيرَهُ ابنَ خاقانَ أن يأتِيَ له بامرأةٍ لا مثيلَ لها في الجَمال. وبعدَ بحثٍ طويل، يأتي الوزيرُ بفتاةٍ اسمُها أنيسُ الجليس، ويُسْكِنُها عندَه حتى تتجهَّزَ للملِك، لكنَّ أنيسْ ترى ابنَ الوزير، عليّْ نورَ الدين ويقَعُ كلاهُما في غَرامِ الآخَرِ ويتزوجان. يموتُ ابنُ خاقان، ويعلَمُ الملِكُ بأمْرِ عليٍّ وأنيسْ ويقرِّرُ القبْضَ عليهما، فيهربانِ مِن البصرة.
