Dharma Taylor | Designer & Maker
The next episode of A Collection Of… Spaces is with multidisciplinary designer & maker Dharma Taylor. We met in Coal Drops Yard and walked along the Regent’s Canal towpath, talking about the different spaces that have shaped Dharma’s practice. Without a fixed studio space at the moment, Dharma works between home, teaching, shared workshops and the spaces she finds herself in. Her practice moves between furniture, textiles and objects, with a particular interest in natural materials, colour, texture and the relationship between making and the environment. We discussed how working closely with other makers allows Dharma to learn new skills, develop ideas and bring them into finished objects. This includes her transition from fashion into furniture during lockdown, learning carpentry through a remote collaboration, and later working with Christopher Farr (https://christopherfarr.com/rug/editions-wood-grain/) and Paul Smith (https://www.paulsmith.com/uk/discover/events-exhibitions/dharma-taylor). We also talked about research, her residency with Iniva (https://iniva.org/a-living-archive-research-progress-by-dharma-taylor/) and the Stuart Hall Library, (https://www.stuarthallfoundation.org/resource/page/2/?utm_source=chatgpt.com#:~:text=A%20Living%20Archive%20%E2%80%93%20Research%20Progress%20by%20Dharma%20Taylor) and the importance of building your own archive through books, conversations, observations and everyday experiences. Alongside this, we discussed teaching, motherhood, community and the idea of creating objects that can outlast us and carry a sense of permanence and legacy. Jaimus Tailor | Designer & Maker & Founder of Greater Goods
The next episode of A Collection Of… Spaces is with designer, maker and founder of Greater Goods, Jaimus Tailor. I visited Jaimus at his studio in Wood Green, North London, where Greater Goods has grown from a bedroom project into a multidisciplinary studio focused on textiles, workshops and creative collaborations. Our conversation explores Jaimus' fascination with understanding how things are made. From teaching himself to sew after buying his first machine on eBay, to taking apart garments to understand their construction, making has always been a way of learning. We also discuss the in person workshops that have become a core part of Greater Goods, creating accessible ways for people to discover making through sewing. Alongside client commissions and collaborative projects, we talk about Paperweight Club, a community based life drawing drawing club he started last year. Throughout the conversation we return to ideas of curiosity, constraint and experimentation, reflecting on how limitations often lead to better creative outcomes, why understanding process creates a deeper appreciation for the objects around us, and how different ways of making reveal different ways of thinking. Jaclyn Pappalardo | Designer & Maker
The next episode of A Collection Of… Spaces is with designer & maker Jaclyn Pappalardo. I visited Jaclyn at her studio in Pullens Yards, just a few streets from Elephant and Castle. She shares the space with a designer and a printmaker. Jaclyn's work explores industrial manufacturing processes in unexpected ways. One series of seating investigates hydroforming, where two sheets of metal are welded together before being inflated using pressurised air or water, creating soft, organic forms from a rigid material. Alongside this are projects using sand-cast aluminium to produce sculptural vases, revealing her fascination with understanding and pushing manufacturing processes along with making connections with facilitators who can bring these ideas to life. We also discussed a project developed in 2025 with Ercol and Max Radford Gallery titled Grain Pile (https://www.maxradfordgallery.com/exhibitions/grain-pile-2025), which gave 6 designers access to Ercol's archive of components at their Hertfordshire production facility. The resulting work was exhibited at Clerkenwell Fire Station as part of London Design Festival in 2025. Pullens Yards were purpose-built between 1870 and 1901 for craftspeople and small traders, creating one of London's earliest examples of live/work spaces. Originally comprising around 650 flats arranged around four workshop yards, around 360 flats and three of the original yards remain today. Shimell & Madden | Jewellery Designers & Makers
The next episode of A Collection Of… Spaces is with jewellery designers and makers Luke Shimell & Emma Madden at their studio in Haggerston, East London. Luke and Emma met in Devon while both beginning their journeys in the jewellery industry, Luke through a more traditional apprenticeship route, and Emma from a craft based practice. They began their creative partnership in 2010 and have continued ever since. Their early collections took inspiration from minerals, rocks and naturally occurring geometric forms and shapes that still inform their bespoke work today. Both share an interest not only in the intricacies of making, but also in how materials react to heat and chemicals through a process called ‘pickling’. Their understanding informs the ways in which ways materials transform through scientific processes during production. The nature of their work often leads to people bringing heirloom jewellery to be reworked into contemporary pieces, alongside the bespoke work of designing & making engagement and wedding bands that carry the stories of their wearers throughout their lives. These are objects designed to be worn daily, lived with, and hopefully passed down through generations. Designing for longevity within such small and delicate objects is no simple brief to fulfil. The building in which their studio and workshop sits felt nostalgic, full of the smells, colours and quiet atmosphere that reminded me of my dad’s offices in the 90s. John Booth | Ceramicist & Illustrator
This episode of "A Collection Of… Spaces" is with John Booth, ceramicist, designer and illustrator. I visited John in his railway-arch studio in Haggerston, East London, a space he’s shared for the past nine years with seven other artists working across ceramics and mixed media. The studio has the feel of a home workspace: books, magazines and sketches are always within reach, feeding a constant loop of ideas. John’s corner is a layered mix of practical workbenches, past projects, rammed bookshelves and plaster moulds, all sharing the signature pops of colour you’ll recognise from his work. His practice spans objects like egg cups and mugs through to fashion collections and large-scale murals for some of the world’s biggest fashion labels, including Fendi. We spoke about John’s creative journey: moving from Cumbria to London to study Fashion Print Design at Central Saint Martins, working in-house for major fashion houses after graduating, and how a passing interest in a ceramics course gradually became the core medium for creating his work today. My main takeaway from the conversation was John’s openness to learning and collaborating with others. This comes through clearly in his large-scale public installations, where ideas are presented to fabricators and brands through sketches and maquettes rather than polished 3D renders, keeping the work closely aligned with his process. It was a useful reminder for me, someone who often believes everything can be learned alone, that while that may be true, working with collaborators can elevate the outcome. That balance is especially clear in his ongoing collaboration with Ian McIntyre under the name Supergroup. John’s creative outlook is complemented by Ian’s technical and fabrication insight, creating a strong connection between bespoke studio pieces and factory-scale production, most recently seen in their collections for Hem & The Conran Shop. Liang-Jung Chen | Artist & Researcher
The first episode of A Collection Of… Spaces in 2026 is a conversation with Liang-Jung Chen, an artist, researcher and collector. I visited Liang at her live/work studio in Poplar, East London, where she has been based as part of a three-year residency at the Acme Fire Station. The space functions as both home and studio, supporting a practice that moves between making, research and reflection. I first came across Liang through The Hardware Archive and was curious about how the project has evolved over time. We spoke about the process of collecting, researching and cataloguing everyday household items, and how the archive operates as an ongoing research space that elevates ubiquitous hardware, objects often overlooked yet deeply embedded in daily life. Our conversation explored how Liang uses her space, and the realities of being a full-time artist in London while also taking part in international residencies and workshops. We talked about the challenges of finding short-term work with other artists and arts organisations, and how this shapes the rhythm of her practice. Liang’s wider artistic work spans movement, performance and site-specific installation. A recent project documents her personal journey through the British citizenship and indefinite leave to remain application process, using performance and documentation to navigate systems of belonging and bureaucracy. I left the conversation thinking about what it means to live and work in the same space, something many people struggle to separate both physically and mentally. It echoed my earlier conversation with Daniel Eatock and the idea of treating everything as one, the work you make and the life you live unified in a way that allows ideas to emerge, overlap and evolve. Daniel Eatock | Artist & Designer
Welcome back to 'A Collection Of Spaces', this episode is with Daniel Eatock an artist and designer. I visited Daniel in his home studio in Lower Clapton in East London. A space which each room has its own studio function for ideas, physical making, cooking a meal or sharing time with friends and family. I'd rediscovered Daniel's work recently through a show as part of London Design Festival where he made skateboards decks inspired by the shape of swimming pools titled 'Alvar Wave and the Ripple Effect’. I then spent an inspiriting Saturday morning looking through Daniels website on which, he has chronologically shared ideas, realised exhibitions and created opportunities for collaboration going back to 1991. It connected with me through a wide mix of photography, concepts for furniture and ideas of projects yet to be fully realised. From there I discovered he had created the platform the website was built on called Indexhibit. A platform I'd spent many hours building my own websites on around 2007 and helped to start my time as website designer after university building websites friends and tutors photography portfolios. Daniel’s work is highly conceptual, a word that might feel daunting without seeing it in action, but at its core it’s about generating ideas, sharing them, and seeing how they can evolve, whether in an instant or over the course of a few years. I hope you enjoy the conversation and I encourage you to take time to look at his huge archive of work on his website - Eatock.com (https://www.eatock.com/) Enjoy! https://www.eatock.com (https://www.eatock.com/) https://www.instagram.com/eatockdaniel (https://www.instagram.com/eatockdaniel) - - - If you would like to contribute to this series then please feel free to get in touch. Roads2Joya | Upholsterers
Welcome back to ‘A Collection Of Spaces’ for 2025 with Upholsterers - Ayesha & Steph from Roads2Joya At the start of last year, I was searching for a way to step away from the workshop for a day, find some inspiration, and learn new skills. That's when I discovered Ayesha and Steph from Roads2Joya and their upholstery workshop—so off I went! Since then, Ayesha has commissioned me for several fabrication jobs, including stool bases and chair frames. It's been such a rewarding experience, not only learning about the intricate processes behind upholstery but also getting to know them both at their studio in Peckham over a few cups of tea. In this episode, we dive into their journeys into upholstery, from their formal craft education to the techniques they’ve perfected working on everything from Georgian-era furniture to modern-day pieces. We talked about the process of collaborating with designers and architects, exploring how they transform a flat 2D drawing into a piece of furniture that’s not only built to last a lifetime but can also be reupholstered by future owners. Luna del Pinal | Fashion Designers
The 5th visit for ‘A Collection Of Spaces’ is with Gabriela Luna & Corina del Pinal. - Fashion Designers. Their brand Luna del Pinal is a destination-led, artisanal womenswear and lifestyle brand, designed and produced in Guatemala. I reached out to Gabriela & Corina from fashion & lifestyle brand Luna del Punal and they invited me to their studio space in Bethnal Green. Houses in what appeared to be the old council headquarters. They had worked with Luke & Nik (https://www.acollectionof.info/spaces-all/luke-and-nik-artists) from episode 1 on a video & photo series a few summers ago & I’d heard great things 🙏🏻 The duo whose bright corner studio was filled with fabrics, samples and objects for their research trips. A space surrounded by artists & painters whose studio spaces were divided up by curtains and bed sheets, something that you often see in these temporary studio before a developer takes the land back. Contrasting to an outsiders perception of glamour you often associate with the fashion world. We spoke about their early days of building the brand in London and the journey they took to discover the artisans and crafts people they now work collaboratively with in Guatemala. A collaboration which developed from a creative soul searching trip to learn about textiles and weaving. I learnt about the process of creating, showcasing & selling a fashion collection, what that really means and how long it takes to go from an idea in a sketchbook to an item which you can wear every day. Gabriela & Corina are full of excitement for the processes and fabrics they have discovered from their research trips. It was an enjoyable hour spent in the studio and I hope that comes across in the conversation. https://www.lunadelpinal.com/shop (https://www.lunadelpinal.com) https://www.instagram.com/lunadelpinal/ (https://www.instagram.com/lunadelpinal/) - - - If you would like to contribute to this series then please feel free to get in touch. Michael Marriott | Designer
The 4th visit for A Collection Of Spaces is with Designer - Michael Marriott. I came across Michaels work from the Modernist Estates Instagram last year. He had a popup market stall inside the new Paul Smith shop at Borough Market and it was great to see the smaller object from his 'Wood Metal Plastic' project in real life. As with a couple of these conversions we connected about a shared interest in local Skateparks, a place that Michael visits with his son and slowly witnessing the communities they foster. We spent the morning at his studio / workshop in Dalston, talking about setting up the space 10 years ago, how it's evolved for him and the projects that have been made there. We spoke about the difference between a workshop & a studio as well as between designers, makers and crafts people. This first part of the conversion wasn't recorded but led us down an interesting path about the layers of visual lenses in the way we see our surrounding be that as a designer, photographer or skateboarder. https://www.michaelmarriott.com (https://www.michaelmarriott.com) https://woodmetalplastic.com (https://woodmetalplastic.com) https://www.instagram.com/instamarriott2.0 (https://www.instagram.com/instamarriott2.0) - - - If you would like to contribute to this series then please feel free to get in touch. Matt Watts | Joiner
Matt grew up in the same town as me and we spent a lot of our summer evenings at the local skatepark & winters under the cover of a Morrisons carpark skating & BMXing. He was from the generation above me, so I would look up to him & his group of friends who were in bands and had cars to carry ramps around town. Jumping forward nearly 20 years and last summer I heard Matt had started a YouTube channel as a way to connect with other makers and get out of a solo working funk we all can find ourselves in. He's built house extensions, plastered bathrooms & fitted out retail shops. Recently he has focused his craft on cabinetry & joinery for residential clients. We spent the afternoon chatting about his journey and the workshop space he has in the Bedfordshire county side. https://www.instagram.com/wattsjoinerybarn/ (https://www.instagram.com/wattsjoinerybarn/) https://www.youtube.com/@Wattsjoinerybarn (https://www.youtube.com/@Wattsjoinerybarn) - - - If you would like to contribute to this series then please feel free to get in touch. Tami Aftab | Photographer
I really enjoyed listening back to this one, as Tami has been in the space for the past 2 years and I remember visiting when they first moved and you could feel the excitement of a group of young photographers & designers all working alongside each other. I spent a short hour with Tami at her shared studio space aka ‘Plant Face Studios‘ in Peckham. She graduated from LCC in 2020 & has quickly made her mark on the photography world in the past four years. Her work can be seen in magazines, online and recently in a collaborative book with her dad exploring memory and her Pakistani heritage.
