Talent vs. Skill
“If people knew how hard I had to work to gain my mastery, it would not seem so wonderful at all” - Michelangelo In this episode we wade into the age-old debate of talent versus skill. Find out why neither of us is particularly keen on being complimented for our talent. First, we dig into what science says about talent vs skill, then share our personal insights from our own experiences in miniature painting, emphasizing that while talent may spark the flame, it’s intentional practice that fuels the growth of skill. “The student will practice until they get it right. The Master has practiced until he can’t get it wrong” - Tommy Angelo Instagram: A Curious Miniature Adventure: https://www.instagram.com/acuriousminiatureadventure/ (https://www.instagram.com/acuriousminiatureadventure/) Devin Bush: https://www.instagram.com/brush.adept/ (https://www.instagram.com/brush.adept/) Dan Dugal: https://www.instagram.com/dan_dugal/ (https://www.instagram.com/dan_dugal/) This Podcast is Available on These Platforms: Substack: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@ACuriousMiniatureAdventure (https://www.youtube.com/@ACuriousMiniatureAdventure) Spotify: Apple Podcast: Links to sources we used in this episode: A theory of the skill-performance relationship, Yannis Iso-Ahola (https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/psychology/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2024.1296014/full) Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell (https://link.amazon/B09VjkRjX) Peak: Unleashing Your Inner Champion Through Revolutionary Methods for Skill Acquisition and Performance Enhancement in Work, Sports, and Life, Anders Ericsson, Robert Pool (https://link.amazon/B0auaMgc9) The Talent Code: Greatness Isn’t Born. Your Learning Journey
Follow us on Instagram! Devin Bush (https://www.instagram.com/brush.adept/) Dan Dugal (https://www.instagram.com/dan_dugal/) In this episode, Devin and Dan explore how we learn. Starting with learning modalities like audial, visual, textual, and kinesthetic and how most of us tend to have a preference for one, but knowing about and mixing them together can make a more wholistic educational experience. From there, they examine andragogy, an adult learning theory pioneered by German educator Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy, and expanded by Malcolm Knowles, an early pioneer in the field. Using these tools and practical tips from the hosts, we hope to help you take control of your learning journey and help you craft your education with focus and intention. There's more than one motivational style
Motivation Lack of motivation keeping you from your painting desk? Motivation, or the lack of it, affects all of us from time to time in our painting journey. In this episode, Dan and Devin take a deep dive into motivation. They reveal some things that masquerade as lack of motivation but are symptoms of other problems. They discuss intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation and then presents three motivational styles based in the Indian practice of Ayurveda; Fire, Wind, and Earth. Understanding yourself can help you to identify which style works best for you, and help you design your workflow and practice to keep moving forward on your curious miniature adventure.
