Breaking Free from Self-Punishment: Why You Punish Yourself & How to Finally Stop (Ep. 014)

For many people, shame doesn’t just stay in our thoughts. It turns into a pattern of self-punishment. We carry the weight of what happened or what we believe we did wrong, and somewhere along the way, we begin to feel like we deserve to suffer for it. In Episode 014 of A Door of Hope, Kay and Kerry talk about how this cycle forms, how to recognize it in your own life, and why it can be so hard to let go of. They explore the connection between shame and the need to punish ourselves, and how we can finally break cycles of self-punishment and self-sabotage. Overcoming a Shame-Based Identity: Who You Are vs. What Happened to You (Ep. 013)

After trauma, it’s easy for shame to take root and slowly shape the way we see ourselves. What starts as something that happened to us can begin to feel like something that defines us. In Episode 013 of A Door of Hope, Kay and Kerry talk about how to recognize a shame-based identity and the ways it can quietly influence our thoughts, beliefs, and sense of worth. They explore what it looks like to walk through the healing process with Jesus, gently untangling the lies that shame has built over time and rediscovering the identity God gave us long before trauma ever entered the picture. This episode is about learning to separate who you are from what happened to you, and taking steps toward seeing yourself through a lens of truth, not shame. The Voice of Shame: How To Stop the Inner Abuser (Ep. 012)

Shame has a voice, and for many people who have experienced trauma, it can become loud and relentless. In this episode of A Door of Hope, Kay and Kerry talk about how toxic shame can take root after painful or traumatizing experiences, shaping the way we see ourselves and the stories we begin to believe about our own worth. These internal messages often grow out of moments where something deeply painful happened, leading us to quietly accept the lie that what happened to us defined who we are. Thankfully, we can learn to recognize the voice of shame, challenge the lies it tells us, and slowly reclaim a healthier, more truthful understanding of who we are in Christ. The Truth About Sexual Abuse in the Catholic Church (Ep. 011)

There are many rumors surrounding sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, but finding clear statistics about it can be surprisingly difficult. In Episode 011 of A Door of Hope, Kay and Kerry take a deep dive into the reality of sexual abuse within religious settings. They talk about the complicated position many survivors find themselves in when their abuse comes from someone who has spiritual authority in the church. It takes significant courage and strength to speak up or report the abuse when leadership is involved. Confronting this kind of abuse isn’t easy, and survivors are often shamed or gaslit into silence. But telling the truth, even when it may come at great cost, can be the first step toward freedom and healing. How Do I Trust God After Trauma? (Ep. 010)

Trauma has a way of shaking the very foundation of our faith. When you’ve been deeply hurt, especially in ways that feel unjust or unanswered, trusting God can feel confusing, fragile, or even impossible. In Episode 10 of A Door of Hope, Kay and Kerry explore the idea that God does not demand blind trust from wounded hearts. Instead, He works to earn our trust by being loving, long-suffering, and patient with us as we walk through our healing journey. They unpack what it looks like to bring your doubts and hard questions into the light rather than suppressing them. Healing often begins with giving yourself permission to wrestle with God. Surviving Spiritual Abuse: Healing After Scripture Was Used to Harm You (Ep. 009)

Spiritual abuse is one of the most confusing and devastating forms of harm because it uses something sacred against the very people it claims to protect. In Episode 009 of A Door of Hope, Kay and Kerry step into the difficult but necessary conversation about what happens when faith is weaponized—when Scripture is twisted, manipulated, or used to control, silence, or shame. Many who have endured this kind of abuse find themselves not only wounded by people in positions of authority, but they also struggle to trust God. When Scripture has been used to harm you, even opening a Bible or walking into a church can feel unsafe. But there is hope! If you or someone you love has experienced faith used as a weapon, this conversation offers validation, clarity, and hope that freedom is possible. Trauma in the Church: When Silence Equals Consent (Ep. 008)

Trauma in the church is not something we like to talk about, but it’s something we can’t afford to ignore. In Episode 008 of A Door of Hope, Kay and Kerry discuss how tempting it can be, even as Christians, to look away from painful situations or offer a quick Scripture instead of sitting with someone in their hurt. But showing up for one another isn’t optional. As those called to be the hands and feet of Jesus—to be “Christ with skin on”—we are invited to step into the hard places, to listen well, and to help carry the weight for our brothers and sisters who may be quietly struggling with unbearable trauma. A Door of Hope: The Truth About Satanic Ritual Abuse and the Satanic Panic (Ep.001)

Satanic Ritual Abuse (SRA) is a deeply misunderstood and often dismissed form of trauma involving systematic abuse designed to fracture the body, mind, and soul. In the premiere episode of A Door of Hope, hosts Kay and Kerry—both survivors of extensive SRA—define what SRA is, explore why it occurs, and shed light on the tactics used in the early 1990s to discredit legitimate cases by labeling them as part of the so-called “Satanic Panic.” This episode seeks to bring truth, clarity, and freedom to survivors while challenging long-standing misconceptions surrounding this horrific and complex form of abuse.
