Nero, Rome, and the First Imperial Attack on Christians

Tacitus → Suetonius → later Christian sources → modern debate about Nero Episode 4 — Nero, Rome, and the First Imperial Attack on Christians Rome burns. Christians are blamed. And an emperor turns against them. The persecution associated with Nero has become one of the most famous episodes in the history of early Christianity—but what actually happened? In this episode, we travel to first-century Rome and examine the Great Fire of Rome, Nero's response, and the ancient evidence surrounding the persecution of Christians. What did Nero actually accuse Christians of? Why did Christians become convenient targets? How severe was the persecution? And what can the historical sources tell us about the traditions connecting this period with Peter and Paul? We'll separate the historical evidence from later assumptions and examine what we can responsibly say about one of the earliest major episodes of Roman hostility toward Christians. Nero's persecution also raises a larger question that will continue throughout this season: What happens when a small religious movement comes into conflict with imperial power? The story of Christian persecution did not begin with Nero—but Nero gives us one of the earliest and most dramatic windows into the relationship between Christianity and Rome. 🎙️ Nicole’s Bytes — Christian History Without the Noise In this episode: Nero • Great Fire of Rome • persecution of Christians • early Christianity • Peter and Paul • Roman Empire • Christian martyrs • ancient Rome • Christian history Primary / ancient sources Tacitus, Annals, 15.38–44 Most important source. Especially 15.44, where Tacitus describes Nero's treatment of Christians following the fire.Tacitus, Annals 15.44 — Perseus (https://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Tac.+Ann.+15.44&utm_source=chatgpt.com) Suetonius, Life of Nero, 38 Important for the Great Fire and the accusations surrounding Nero. Suetonius, Life of Nero, 16.2 Contains the brief statement about punishment of Christians under Nero. Eusebius, Ecclesiastical History, Book 2 Used for later Christian tradition concerning Peter, Paul and Nero. Tertullian, Apology Useful for understanding how later Christians remembered Nero and persecution. Modern scholarship Brent D. Shaw, “The Myth of the Neronian Persecution,” Journal of Roman Studies 105 (2015), pp. 73–100. This is important because Shaw challenges several conventional assumptions about Nero's persecution, including the scale and nature of the event. “The Historicity of the Neronian Persecution: A Response to Brent Shaw,” New Testament Studies 64 (2018). Important because it presents a scholarly response to Shaw and argues that the existence of a Neronian persecution should not simply be dismissed. “Burning Rome, Burning Christians,” in The Cambridge Companion to the Age of Nero. Useful for the historical debate surrounding Tacitus, Nero and the Christians after the fire.

   Why Did Christians Face Death?

Ignatius → Polycarp → Justin → Scillitan Martyrs → later Christian memory Episode 3 — Why Did Rome Persecute Christians? Why did the Roman Empire persecute Christians? Was Christianity persecuted simply because Rome hated Christians? Or was something more complicated happening? The early Christians lived in a world where religion was deeply connected to family, community, politics, civic identity, and the stability of the Roman Empire. Christians worshipped one God. They refused to participate in traditional sacrifices to the Roman gods. They rejected the worship of the emperor as divine. And they increasingly found themselves viewed as outsiders within a society where religious participation was part of public life. In this episode, we explore why Christians could become controversial in the Roman world. What did Roman authorities actually think Christians were doing? Why were Christians sometimes described as atheists even though they clearly believed in God? Why did refusing sacrifice matter? And how did Christianity's refusal to simply blend into Roman religious culture contribute to growing suspicion? Rather than beginning with later stories about persecution, we'll look at the historical world in which Christians actually lived and ask what the evidence tells us. Because to understand Christian persecution, we first have to understand why Christians became a problem for Rome. In this episode: Christian persecution • Roman Empire • early Christians • Roman religion • emperor worship • Christian history • ancient Rome • first-century Christianity • persecution of Christians Primary / early Christian sources Ignatius of Antioch, Letter to the Romans Essential for Ignatius' own attitude toward his approaching martyrdom. Ignatius of Antioch, Letter to the Smyrnaeans and other letters Useful for understanding early Christian community structure and Ignatius' theological language. The Martyrdom of Polycarp The principal ancient account of Polycarp's arrest, trial and death. We use it carefully because it is both an early historical source and a theological/martyrological narrative. Justin Martyr, First Apology Particularly useful for Justin's explanation of why Christians would remain committed to their beliefs despite the possibility of death. The Martyrdom of Justin The later account of Justin's interrogation and execution. The Acts of the Scillitan Martyrs Important for the short North African account of Christians executed at Scillium around AD 180. Irenaeus, Against Heresies 3.3.4 Useful for the early memory of Polycarp and his connection to the apostolic generation. Eusebius, Ecclesiastical History Used cautiously as a later fourth-century compilation of earlier traditions, not as a contemporary eyewitness source. For Ignatius, for example, the surviving tradition explicitly portrays him being taken from Antioch toward Rome and meeting Polycarp at Smyrna. Historical method for Episode 3 The important distinction in this episode is: Ancient source → what it says happened → what historians can establish → how Christians interpreted the event. We shouldn't automatically treat every detail in a martyrdom account as a verbatim historical transcript.

   Why Did Rome Persecute Christians

Pliny → Trajan → Roman legal scholarship Episode 2 — The World of the First Christians Before we can understand what happened to the first Christians, we need to understand the world they lived in. Christianity did not appear in a vacuum. The first Christians lived within the Roman Empire, a world shaped by Judaism, Greek culture, Roman religion, temples, sacrifice, political loyalty, and the growing importance of emperor worship. So what did everyday life look like for the people who first followed Jesus? What religious traditions surrounded them? What did Romans believe about the gods? Why were sacrifices so important? And what did it mean to refuse participation in the religious practices that were woven into Roman public and civic life? In this episode, we step into the world Christianity entered. We’ll explore the religious, political, and cultural environment surrounding the earliest Christian communities—and begin to understand why Christianity could become so difficult for Roman society to categorize. Before we can understand why Christians were persecuted, we need to understand the world that viewed them with suspicion. In this episode: early Christians • Roman Empire • first-century Christianity • Judaism • Greek culture • Roman religion • emperor worship • sacrifice • ancient Christianity • Christian history Primary / Ancient Sources Pliny the Younger, Letters, Book 10, Letters 96–97 — Pliny's correspondence with Emperor Trajan concerning Christians. Tacitus, Annals, Book 15, Chapter 44 — Nero, the fire of Rome, and the persecution of Christians. Acts of the Apostles — especially Acts 16, 17, and 19, for earlier examples of Christian interaction with Roman society and authorities. 1 Corinthians 8–10 — important evidence for the complexity of Christian participation in a society shaped by pagan sacrifice. Decian libelli — surviving certificates documenting sacrifices performed under the Decian requirement. Modern Historical Scholarship J. B. Rives, “The Decree of Decius and the Religion of Empire,” Journal of Roman Studies. James Corke-Webster, “Legislation and Christians,” Journal of Roman Studies, 2026.
