[…] I mean, the great thing about the new technology, once they'd got it working, they discovered that it was capable of much further extension and producing numbers which would have seemed incredible at the time in 1971. Yeah, so the key thing is the three-spool technology we've talked about turns out to be really easy to scale up. So the biggest thing, you can make more and more powerful engines without going through the agony of a complete redesign. Over time, the thrust on an RB211, which starts at around £40,000 in the Tri-Stars, goes to £50,000 by 1973. And Boeing is so surprised by how impressive this engine is that they say, oh, well, we'll offer it to customers of the Boeing 747, which is, I mean, amazing outcome. when you think about the fact that they had been locked out of the American market up till that point.
