[…] I have a sister and three brothers, and we did not get the opportunity to inherit and cultivate the land that my family owned because it was stolen from us. Carla goes on to say that her father and grandparents purchased their homestead in Nicodemus in the late 1960s. land that was once owned by her great-grandmother. At his peak, Mr. Bates was farming on about 2,000 acres, 950 of which he owned. The rest he rented. And so we also had livestock. He had cattle, pigs, chickens. So my dad was a full-fledged farmer. And then in the 70s, what happened is that due to weather and man has no control over that, our crops were destroyed. […]
