[…] So one of the brain's reward systems is the endorphin system. It's like an opiate-like peptide. And gamblers and alcoholics have a deficiency in that system. When they are confronted with normal rewards, our belief is that only when they are engaged in the activity that is their addiction will they get the endorphin release that most of us would get. from a general reward, social interactions, et cetera. And that's the big challenge now is to how you can take someone who can only get some kind of endorphin or some other chemical reward from an addiction. How can you can broaden it so that you can get pleasure from doing other things like seeing other images like music or whatever. […]
