The Washington Commanders are favored against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football, and Sean Anderson is breaking down the optimal, suboptimal and realistic outcomes for this massive NFC East matchup. Sean believes Washington can win. But the Commanders have to play the right kind of game. The first optimal outcome is simple: Washington looks like a completely different football team. The Commanders need to run the ball effectively, throw the ball efficiently and protect Jayden Daniels in the pocket. After weeks of frustrating results and self-inflicted mistakes, Sean wants to see Washington finally put together a complete performance. The second key is the Commanders' running backs. Sean wants Washington's running backs to contribute at least 150 total yards, whether that comes through rushing, receiving or a combination of both. Philadelphia has struggled against both the run and the pass, so Washington needs to keep the Eagles from simply teeing off on Jayden Daniels. The third optimal outcome is finally solving the Dallas Goedert problem. Washington cannot allow Goedert to become the X-factor once again. Sean doesn't care who gets the job done — Sonny Styles, a safety or even an unexpected defender — but somebody needs to keep Goedert from taking over the game. Then come the suboptimal outcomes. The biggest nightmare is Tanner McKee actually playing well enough to duel Jayden Daniels. Sean believes Daniels is the clearly superior quarterback, and Washington cannot allow McKee to suddenly find his footing and start tearing apart the Commanders' secondary. The offensive line also cannot give up three or more sacks. Washington needs to protect Daniels and allow him to make plays rather than forcing him to spend the entire night running for his life. Turnovers are another major concern. The Commanders cannot give Philadelphia extra possessions, especially after a full week of preparation coming out of the bye. And perhaps most importantly, Washington has to eliminate the procedural penalties. Illegal formations. False starts. Delay of game. Too many men in the huddle. Illegal man downfield. Sean is tired of seeing these mistakes, and he believes coming out of a bye week with another wave of procedural penalties would be unacceptable. The realistic outcome? Sean believes the Commanders win. It may not be pretty. Philadelphia is still a talented football team, and Washington cannot afford to overlook the Eagles simply because Tanner McKee is expected to start at quarterback. Sean expects Washington's team leaders to step up, Jayden Daniels to stay poised and players like Sonny Styles, Mike Sainristil, Trey Amos and others to make important plays. But there's one thing Sean believes is almost inevitable. Dallas Goedert is probably going to score. Even if Washington wins, Sean expects Goedert to find the end zone against the Commanders once again. So what happens Sunday night? Sean Anderson breaks down the optimal, suboptimal and realistic outcomes for Commanders-Eagles. The Commanders NEED To Attack This Eagles Weakness
Download the Kalshi app and use code ATOZ to get $20 when you trade $20. Kalshi. Trade on anything. Sign up today: Sponsor Disclosure: Kalshi: 18+ only. The Washington Commanders face the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football in one of the most important games of Washington's season, and Sean Anderson breaks down exactly how the Commanders can attack Philadelphia. The Eagles have plenty of defensive talent. But they aren't playing like it. Philadelphia is allowing 25 points per game, which ranks 21st in the NFL, and the Eagles are struggling to play cohesively despite having stars at every level of the defense. That creates a major opportunity for Washington. The Eagles are allowing opponents to score touchdowns on 55% of their red-zone trips, meaning the Commanders should have opportunities to put points on the board. And Sean believes Washington needs to take advantage of every scoring opportunity. After some of the questionable fourth-down decisions that have hurt the Commanders this season, Washington cannot afford to leave points on the field against Philadelphia. Take the points when they're there. The Eagles' run defense is also surprisingly vulnerable. Philadelphia ranks 27th in the NFL against the run, allowing 131 rushing yards per game and 144 over its last three games. That's a matchup Washington should attack. The Commanders have already shown they can run the football effectively, and Sean believes there is no reason Washington shouldn't lean into that strength against Philadelphia. The Eagles' pass defense isn't much better. Philadelphia ranks 26th in passing yards allowed per game, giving up 240 yards through the air. That doesn't mean Washington should nickel-and-dime Philadelphia all night. In fact, Sean believes the opposite. The Eagles have allowed the fourth-lowest completion percentage in the NFL, meaning Washington is unlikely to consistently win with short throws. The opportunities will come from chunk plays. If Jayden Daniels can stay patient and find the explosive opportunities downfield, Washington could have a big passing day. There are also several individual matchups to watch. Washington needs to keep Dallas Goedert from becoming a major factor, especially considering his history against the Commanders. The offensive line also has a major challenge against Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis, while Jayden Daniels may need to use his legs to escape pressure and create plays. Sean also breaks down how Washington can use the Eagles' defensive tendencies against them and why this is a much more favorable matchup than the names on Philadelphia's defense might suggest. The Eagles have talented players. But they aren't playing good defense right now. Can Washington run the ball? Can Jayden Daniels create explosive plays? Can the Commanders take advantage of Philadelphia's struggling secondary? And can Washington finally finish a game and get the win it desperately needs? Sean Anderson breaks down the biggest matchups, advantages and weaknesses heading into Commanders-Eagles. The Commanders Have NO Excuses Against The Eagles
The Washington Commanders are 1-4-1 heading into Sunday Night Football against the Philadelphia Eagles, and Sean Anderson believes Washington could not have asked for a better opportunity to turn its season around. This is the game. The Commanders are coming off a bye week. The Eagles are coming off a short week after losing to the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football. Washington has had extra time to prepare, while Philadelphia is dealing with injuries across its roster. Most importantly, Jayden Daniels is healthy and expected to start for Washington. Philadelphia, meanwhile, is without Jalen Hurts and could be forced to rely on Tanner McKee at quarterback. Saquon Barkley is also dealing with a lower-body injury, while DeVonta Smith and other Eagles players are dealing with injuries. Sean believes that gives Washington a massive opportunity. The Commanders need to take advantage. Philadelphia's defense looked dominant for much of Monday night's game against Dallas, but eventually collapsed because the Eagles could not consistently get off the field and their offense couldn't sustain drives. Washington's defense is better than Dallas' defense. If the Commanders can sustain drives offensively for four quarters, Sean believes there is no reason Washington can't beat Philadelphia. And that's why the urgency is so high. Washington is 1-4-1, but the NFC East is still very much within reach. The Giants just picked up a major win, Dallas is making noise and Philadelphia is vulnerable. Sean believes Washington can realistically win eight of its remaining 11 games if Jayden Daniels stays healthy. Winning four of the next five could put the Commanders right back into the NFC East race. But it starts Sunday night. Washington has already blown opportunities against the Giants and 49ers. Sean believes this Eagles game is another opportunity the Commanders simply cannot waste. The Commanders need a win. Jayden Daniels needs a win. Dan Quinn and this coaching staff need a win. And Washington needs to use this game to reset the narrative surrounding the team. Can the Commanders take advantage of Philadelphia's injuries? Can Jayden Daniels lead Washington to its first win in more than a year? Can the defense slow down the Eagles? And can Washington finally turn all of these close games into wins? Sean Anderson breaks down why Commanders-Eagles is the most important and potentially most winnable game of Washington's season.
