What drives us to participate in the pursuit of beauty?
At times it can feel irrational - and yet, we commit to it fully. This series explores that friction and what keeps us going through it. How we extract and insert humanity, levity, and clarity into the work we make and leave behind.
This is Absurdly Beautiful.
Neal Thomas and Bryan Rafanelli on Absurdly Beautiful
Bryan Rafanelli has built a career creating moments that people remember for the rest of their lives. But behind every celebration is a deeper question: what makes an experience meaningful? In this episode of Absurdly Beautiful, Bryan and I explore the relationship between hospitality, memory, and beauty, and why the most successful celebrations are rarely about extravagance—they’re about making people feel seen. Together, we discuss creativity under pressure, leading with generosity, and the enduring belief that bringing people together is one of the most meaningful forms of making.

Neal Thomas and Katie Lydon on Absurdly Beautiful
Katie Lydon’s first language may be color, but her second seems to be intuition. After beginning her career in fashion at American Vogue, Katie built an interior design practice rooted in empathy, refinement, and self-discovery. For her, design is not simply about creating beautiful rooms, but helping clients better understand themselves and reflect that understanding back into the spaces they inhabit. In this episode of Absurdly Beautiful, Katie and I discuss the relationship between curiosity and creativity, the role empathy plays in the design process, and why the pursuit of better work often begins with a willingness to keep learning.

Neal Thomas and Cristián Mohaded on Absurdly Beautiful
Cristián Mohaded has built an internationally recognized design practice from a deeply process-driven visual language shaped by Argentine culture, craft, and instinct.
In this episode of Absurdly Beautiful, we discuss two projects as a way into a broader conversation about ambition, intuition, and the constant movement between questioning, discovery, and moments of resolution.
Rather than focusing on finished objects alone, the conversation explores what it takes to build a creative life — and whether the pursuit itself ever fully resolves.

Neal Thomas and Steven Haulenbeek on Absurdly Beautiful
Steven Haulenbeek plays a long, sometimes freezing, game. Undeterred, he has constructed a life that places him physically and psychologically where he needs to be to realize his often otherworldly creations.
A friend, collaborator, and designer, Steven’s work has shaped many of my clients’ projects over the years. I’ve long admired his fearless commitment to building a creative life rooted in making — art, lighting, furniture, and objects driven by instinct, curiosity, and, at times, childhood memories of ice and snow.
In this episode of Absurdly Beautiful, Steven and I catch up as old friends while exploring corners of his career and personal life less familiar to me — discussing what he has invested, sacrificed, and gained through a life devoted to making.

Neal Thomas and Emily Thompson on Absurdly Beautiful
Emily Thompson seems to operate on the same frequency as plants. Through flowers, branches, and all types of organic matter, she constructs arrangements, structures, and entire environments that transcend conventional floral design and instead give form to the emotional relationship between people and the natural world around them.
I was initially drawn to Emily’s work because of its ability to feel both untamed and expertly composed at the same time — immersive worlds that reveal sensitivity, discipline, and a willingness to trust herself fully.
In this episode of Absurdly Beautiful, we discuss Emily’s participation in the Flower Festival as a way into a broader conversation about instinct, impermanence, and the evolving nature of her creative work.
