Plantains and Our Becoming: Poems by Melania Luisa Marte

Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/632387 (https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/632387) to listen full audiobooks. Title: Plantains and Our Becoming: Poems Author: Melania Luisa Marte Narrator: Melania Luisa Marte Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 3 hours 43 minutes Release date: August 22, 2023 Genres: Poetry Publisher's Summary: A rousing, beautifully observed, and tender-hearted debut poetry collection about identity, culture, home, and belonging—for fans of Jasmine Mans and Fatimah Asghar   “We, children of plátanos, always gotta learn to play in everyone else’s backyard and somehow feel at home.”   Poet and musician Melania Luisa Marte opens PLAINTAINS AND OUR BECOMING by pointing out that  Afro-Latina is not a word recognized by the dictionary. But the dictionary is far from a record of the truth. What does it mean, then, to tend to your own words and your own record—to build upon the legacies of your ancestors?   In this imaginative, blistering poetry collection, Marte looks at the identities and histories of the Dominican Republic and Haiti to celebrate and center the Black diasporic experience. Through the exploration of themes like self-love, nationalism, displacement, generational trauma, and ancestral knowledge, this collection uproots stereotypes while creating a new joyous vision for Black identity and personhood.   Moving from New York to Texas to the Dominican Republic and to Haiti, this collection looks at the legacies of colonialism and racism but never shies away from highlighting the beauty—and joy—that comes from celebrating who you are and where you come from. PLANTAINS AND OUR BECOMING is “a full-throated war cry; both a request for anointment and the responding bendición” (Elizabeth Acevedo).

   Fixer: Poems by Edgar Kunz

Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/647249 (https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/647249) to listen full audiobooks. Title: Fixer: Poems Author: Edgar Kunz Narrator: Edgar Kunz Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 0 hours 38 minutes Release date: August 22, 2023 Genres: Poetry Publisher's Summary: A New York Times Editors’ Choice book from the author of the award-winning Tap Out – “a gritty, insightful debut” (Washington Post) – Edgar Kunz’s second poetry collection propels the reader across the shifting terrain of late-capitalist America.   Temp jobs, conspiracy theories, squatters, talk therapy, urban gardening, the robot revolution: this collection fixes its eye on the strangeness of labor, through poems that are searching, keen, and wry. The virtuosic central sequence explores the untimely death of the poet’s estranged father, a handyman and addict, and the brothers left to sort through the detritus of a life long lost to them. Through lyrical, darkly humorous vignettes, Kunz asks what it costs to build a home and a love that not only lasts but sustains.

The Border Simulator: Poems by Gabriel Dozal

Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/640582 (https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/640582) to listen full audiobooks. Title: The Border Simulator: Poems Author: Gabriel Dozal Narrator: Natasha Tiniacos, Gabriel Dozal Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 4 hours 28 minutes Release date: August 15, 2023 Genres: Poetry Publisher's Summary: A world-bending, lyrically rich poetry collection that reimagines the U.S.-Mexico border as both a real place and a living simulation—and tells the story of a pair of siblings trapped between the two “Word coyote Gabriel Dozal is crossing borders with this story. It’s his job: narrative poetry discovering a new language.”—Sandra Cisneros, author of Woman Without Shame “This crosser is a possession that someone wants but we’re not sure who and the crosser must often possess themselves. In perpetuity” In Gabriel Dozal’s debut collection, the U.S.-Mexico border is redefined as a place of invention; crossing it becomes a matter of simulation. The poems accompany Primitivo, who attempts to cross the border, an imaginary boundary that becomes more real and challenging as his journey progresses; and his sister, Primitiva, who lives an alternate, static life as an exploited migrant worker in la fabrica.  The tech world and bureaucracy collide, with humanity falling by the wayside, as Primitiva endures drudgery in la fabrica. “In the past our ID cards were decorative. Now we switch off with someone else, another worker who will wipe the serenade from our eyes.” With no way to escape the simulation, Primitivo and Primitiva must participate in it, scheming to gain its favor. To win, you must be the best performer in the factory, the best imitation of a citizen, the best machine. Featuring a bilingual format for English and Spanish readers, The Border Simulator explores physical and metaphysical borders, as well as the digital divide of our modern era. With inventive imagery, spirited wordplay, and thrilling movement, these energetic poems oscillate between the harrowing and the joyful, interrogating, innovating, and ultimately redefining binaries and divisions.
