The Route 66 Effect: Is Life After Amazon around the Corner?
Tune into our latest podcast episode where your hosts, Lara Helmling and Lliam Leosh, delve into the dynamic world of digital platforms and A.I., offering a visionary perspective on the future of online business and publishing. This thought-provoking discussion opens with a compelling analogy: Is Amazon the 21st century version of Route 66, soon to be overshadowed by the rapid advancements in A.I.? They explore the critical importance of building and maintaining one's digital platform, underlining the risks of depending solely on external platforms like Amazon.
As the conversation unfolds, listen to how many authors have already benefited from creating their independent platforms, stepping away from Amazon's shadow. Lara and Lliam shed light on Amazon's business model, likening it to a 'slave army' of authors, constrained by loss leaders similar to milk in grocery stores. But with A.I. on the rise, traditional methods of browsing and price comparison may soon become relics of the past. Imagine a world where A.I. does the heavy lifting, changing how we interact with online marketplaces.
Witness a vivid comparison of the digital shift to the transformation of Las Vegas from mere 'Sin Shacks' to a bustling metropolis, while Route 66's once-thriving businesses dwindled to ghost towns once the new highway was built. This analogy beautifully illustrates the necessity of evolving with technology, emphasizing the urgency to adapt in an ever-changing digital landscape. AI is that new highway, and Amazon could very well lose its place in the online shopping world.

Is AI Getting Dumber? Lara and Lliam Investigate
In this episode, hosts Lara and Lliam address current news articles that claim AI is getting dumber. They ask, "Could too many people talking to AI make it less smart? Or is AI messing with its own programming to stop itself from self-learning?"
They also wonder if trying to make an AI better at some things might accidentally make it worse at others. Or perhaps, are the developers messing with the foundation of the AI in order to save money and resources?
They discuss how AI should be like a handy tool and not something we believe knows everything. They say it's up to us, not AI, to make sure what AI says is right, touching on the idea that trying to program explicit morality into AI is unnecessary and even potentially detrimental. They explain why the responsibility for moral decisions should remain firmly in the human domain.
Tune in to also hear their energetic conversation about how the Copyright Office has categorized AI-generated content, arguing that their classification of AI as a non-human entity similar to a monkey is erroneous. AI isn’t living at all so the classification doesn’t make sense. Instead, they assert, AI should be viewed as a mechanical tool, like a calculator or a car, which requires a human operator to determine its actions, and it's this human who should be credited as the originator of the content produced using the tool.

They also dive into the provocative notion of the 'post-social' age of media - a world where content trumps connections and platforms are evolving (or devolving) into performance stages. As we navigate the complex web of para-social relationships and confront the potential pitfalls of 'cancel culture,' one can't help but question - has the essence of social media as a communal space been lost in the algorithmic labyrinth of personalized content bubbles?

Through a mix of personal anecdotes and insightful analysis, they explore the emerging reality where AIs are becoming so sophisticated that they can convincingly impersonate human interaction, as exemplified by a deceptive encounter with an AI customer service representative.
They dissect the Uncanny Valley theory, a phenomenon describing discomfort when humanoid representations become almost too lifelike, evoking an uncanny feeling of unease. They engage in a thought-provoking discussion on why this emotional reaction occurs and the potential role of trust and empathy in it, concluding with the possibility of generational evolution in responses to humanoid machines.
The hosts incorporate cultural references to bring the discourse to life, discussing a Steven Spielberg film that centers around themes of the uncanny valley and human empathy towards machines. They speculate on the diverse perceptions of the uncanny valley among different demographics, and even suggest a future scenario with a preference for robot caregivers, altering the traditional human-centric caregiving model.
In the broader scope, they ponder over the impending changes in job roles due to AI advancement, emphasizing a paradigm shift towards AI management and programming. The conversation draws intriguing parallels between the workings of the WWII Enigma machine and modern machine interactions, offering a historical context to our contemporary technological narrative.
