What Happens When ADHD Meets Autism? Navigating the AuDHD Experience

Ep. 13: What Happens When ADHD Meets Autism? Navigating the AuDHD Experience Do you crave the chaos of novelty, but panic without a routine? You might be navigating AuDHD. In Episode 13 of ADHD Come Lately, Dave dives into the messy, overlapping space where late-diagnosed ADHD meets suspected autism. Rather than forcing neurodivergence into neat diagnostic boxes, this episode breaks down the core tensions of living with both—including how starting ADHD medications like Vyvanse can suddenly unveil hidden autistic traits. Whether you are formally diagnosed, questioning if you're AuDHD, or validating a self-recognition journey, this episode unpacks the paradoxes of neurodivergent life. Key Topics Covered in This Episode: Novelty vs. Routine: Why your brain demands new experiences yet falls apart without an anchor. The Sensory Paradox: Navigating sensory overload at the supermarket versus thriving in a mosh pit. Order vs. Anarchy (https://www.google.com/goto?url=CAESYwHrOzAVMaheLBovHnZUNfL8oL-4L66OeSlmSchK4FHI3ZCTY-PpvKs8TsQflXy3I5ZStwM8A_4yP_og_gz645khxJFuSffelSvfqlrCnQlV64vU_lBePnT-ehkJ5bS9IsDsjQ): Dr. Khurrum Sadiq's brilliant framework of autism as the 'good parent' and ADHD as the 'good friend'. Social Battery Burnout: Balancing the deep desire for connection with the exhaustion of small talk. The Diagnostic Dilemma: Is an official adult autism assessment worth the cost, or is self-recognition enough? Book Recommendation: Unmasking Autism: Discovering the New Faces of Neurodiversity by Dr. Devon Price, PhD. Research & Public Health: WHO Commission on Social Connection (https://www.who.int/) Lived Experience: Self-recognition is valid. Because formal diagnoses are often privileged, expensive, and inaccessible, we centre lived and living experience and honour the community elders who paved the way. Acknowledgement of Country: Produced on the unceded lands of the Wallumattagal Peoples of the Dharug Nation. We pay our respects to Elders past and present. Sovereignty was never ceded. Always was, always will be Aboriginal Land. Australian Autism & ADHD Support Services ADHD Foundation Australia (https://adhdfoundation.org.au/): The national community charity for ADHD, providing community support services, educational resources, and navigation assistance. AuDHD Time Traveller: What Would You Tell Your Younger Self?

ADHD Time Traveller: What I'd Tell My Younger Self About ADHD & Autism What would you tell your younger self if you could go back and explain what you now know about ADHD, autism and being neurodivergent? In Episode 12 of ADHD Come Lately, Dave looks back at his childhood, adolescence and earlier adult life through the lens of what he now understands about his ADHD and suspected autism. With the benefit of hindsight, he reflects on the things that never quite made sense at the time: feeling different, struggling to understand himself, worrying about the wrong things, and interpreting his experiences without having the language of neurodivergence. What would he do differently? What would he stop worrying about? What would he tell his younger self about ADHD? And would understanding his neurotype earlier have changed anything? This is an episode about ADHD in adulthood, late self-understanding, childhood experiences, memories, hindsight and discovering a neurodivergent identity later in life. Part reflection, part hindsight and hopefully a little bit entertaining, Dave travels back through his own past to offer the advice he wishes he'd had back then. Because sometimes the advice we most needed when we were younger is the advice we're only finally able to give ourselves now. 🎧 A Note on Self-Identification & Neurodivergence This isn’t a trend. It’s a revolution. We recognise, validate, and support people who self-identify or self-recognise as autistic and/or neurodivergent. The traditional clinical diagnostic system can be inaccessible and exclusionary, locking many adults out through prohibitive costs, lengthy waitlists, limited pathways to assessment, and systemic biases that have historically affected women, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and gender-diverse people. Self-identification is not a casual label or something we arrive at lightly. For many people, it comes after months—or years—of research, deep self-reflection, pattern recognition, and developing a profound understanding of their own internal experience. Lived experience matters. We believe people deserve space to explore their neurodivergence without shame, dismissal, or gatekeeping. We welcome those who are formally diagnosed, self-identified, self-recognised, or still questioning. This is about making room for more voices, more stories, and more ways of understanding the human brain. We’re not rewriting the narrative because neurodivergence suddenly exists. We’re rewriting it because people are finally being heard. 🌿 Acknowledgement of Country We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we record and share this podcast—the Wallumattagal Clan of the Dharug Nation. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present, and recognise their deep and enduring connection to the land, waters, culture, and community of this region. Making Friends: An AuDHD Social Story

Episode 11: Making Friends: An AuDHD Social Story Ever felt like everyone else was handed a secret social handbook at birth, and your copy got lost in the mail? In this episode of ADHD Come Lately, we are pulling back the curtain on the messy, exhausting, and deeply misunderstood world of navigating friendships when your brain is wired a little differently. We dive straight into the chaotic intersection of ADHD and Autism (AuDHD) through the lens of a 14-year-old kid in the 90s, using the high-octane soundtrack of Green Day and The Offspring to decode the exact anatomy of neurodivergent masking, executive dysfunction, and burnout. WHAT WE'RE UNPACKING THIS EPISODE: The Soundtrack of the Unregulated Mind: How 90s punk rock bangers like 'All I Want' and 'Basket Case' provided a diagnosis long before the clinical words existed. The 'Masking' Minefield: The immense, invisible energy cost of trying to force an AuDHD brain into a neurotypical mould—and why children don't "grow out of it". Is it ADHD or Autism? Breaking down the internal clash between ADHD impulsivity and autistic sensory overload during socialising. The Text Message Paradox: Why putting off a reply isn't always about forgetting—it’s about the overwhelming uncertainty of what happens after you hit send. Faking It but Never Making It: We talk about using shields like football scripts just to get by. Here's a classic scene from the episode of The IT Crowd that perfectly captures the absurdity of memorising standard scripts just to pass as a 'real man': youtube.com/shorts/uT79sc27l0U Limerence vs. Love: A critical look at how an interest-based nervous system can intensely latch onto a person the same way it does a hyperfixation. THE NEURODIVERGENT UPSIDE We aren't just talking about the struggles. We’re celebrating the absolute goldmine of having an AuDHD friend: the unparalleled creativity, the fierce honesty, and the unwavering loyalty of people who know exactly what it’s like to live on the outside. Whether you’re looking for your tribe, seeking validation for your own late discovery, or just want to feel a little less alone in a world that feels too loud—this episode is your permission slip to put down the handbook and just breathe. Listen now to find validation, not just a crowd. Because you're not deficient—you’re different. NEURODIVERGENT SUPPORT SERVICES (AUSTRALIA) If you are navigating your own late discovery, looking for community, or seeking neuro-affirming guidance, these free and independent Australian services are here to help: Autism Connect (Amaze): A free, national helpline providing independent, expert information for autistic people, their families, and peers. Staying on Script — Vyvanse and AuDHD (?)

What happens after an adult ADHD diagnosis? Does medication solve everything? In this episode of ADHD Come Lately, Dave reflects on life after stabilising on Vyvanse and the realities of living with ADHD as a late-diagnosed adult. From increased focus at work to ongoing struggles with sleep, time blindness, executive functioning, and switching off in the evenings, Dave explores what ADHD medication helps with—and what it doesn't. The episode also examines literal thinking, 'out of sight, out of mind' ADHD traits, parenting while neurodivergent, workplace stress, and the challenge of balancing work, family, and self-care. As his understanding of ADHD deepens, Dave also reflects on whether ADHD fully explains his experiences, exploring traits often associated with AuDHD (Autism and ADHD) and the growing number of adults questioning whether there may be more to their neurodivergence than they first realised. Whether you're newly diagnosed, considering an ADHD assessment, living with AuDHD, or supporting someone who is, this episode offers an honest look at the ongoing journey of self-understanding after diagnosis. Three Lessons from an ADHD Late Diagnosis

🎧 ADHD Come Lately – Episode 9: Three Lessons from an ADHD Late Diagnosis (https://pod.link/1826742829) Six weeks into his ADHD diagnosis, the host reflects on three lessons so far — from the limits of medication to finding acceptance and humour in late discovery. Featuring a powerbank, an airport tannoy, and the things we carry without realising. In this reflective wrap-up to the first season of ADHD Come Lately, we explore what happens after the diagnosis — when the dust settles and real life carries on. Six weeks in, three lessons emerge: 💊 Medication helps, but it’s not magic. 🧭 Very few people will truly understand — and that’s okay. 🌱 I’m still me. Along the way, there’s travel fatigue, tension headaches, RSD triggers, and one deeply awkward airport moment involving a “deported” powerbank. 🎙️ Episode 8: Titration Station — Riding the Ritalin Slow Train (with Possible Delays) In this episode of ADHD Come Lately, Dave reveals that it’s official — he has ADHD. He reflects on what it’s like to finally receive a diagnosis, how it’s opened up new and validating conversations, and the confusion that can come with navigating treatment options. Dave shares his experience of starting Ritalin, what 'titration' actually means, and how it feels to board the slow train of medication adjustment — side effects, surprises, and all. This episode explores patience, comparison, and learning to trust the process (with a little help from Aesop’s fable about the dog and its bone). If you’re starting your own titration journey or still waiting for clarity, this one’s for you. --- 💬 In this episode: How it feels to finally be diagnosed with ADHD What titration is and why it matters My Ritalin schedule and early side effects How stimulant meds differ (Ritalin, Concerta, Vyvanse, Dexamphetamine) The emotional adjustment — and the patience it demands A reminder that slow progress is still progress --- 🧠 Resources & Support (Australia): ADHD Australia: adhdaustralia.org.au Mind Australia (mental health support): mindaustralia.org.au Lifeline (24/7 crisis support): 13 11 14 — lifeline.org.au Beyond Blue: 1300 22 4636 — beyondblue.org.au

5 Common ADHD Traits You're Not Imagining & The Red Pill

🎙 Episode 5 – 5 Common ADHD Traits You’re Not Imagining & The Red Pill In this episode of ADHD Come Lately, we dive into five ADHD traits that don’t appear in the official diagnostic criteria — but if you live with ADHD, you probably know them all too well: 1. Time blindness – The challenge: underestimating how long things take or losing track of time. The flipside: the ability to hyperfocus in the moment and be completely present when something matters. 2. Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) – The challenge: intense emotional pain at perceived rejection or criticism. The flipside: deep empathy, attunement to others, and strong bonds in relationships. 3. Task initiation paralysis – The challenge: procrastination or difficulty starting tasks, even important ones. The flipside: bursts of incredible productivity under pressure, and creative problem-solving when it counts. 4. Low frustration tolerance – The challenge: irritability and overwhelm in stressful situations. The flipside: passionate energy, quick action when things aren’t right, and fierce advocacy for what matters. 5. Shame spirals – The challenge: replaying mistakes and feeling “never good enough.” The flipside: self-awareness, accountability, and a drive to grow and do better. 💡 If you’ve ever wondered “Is this just me?” — this episode is here to tell you: it’s not. And there’s more to the story than the struggle. --- Acknowledgement of Country I acknowledge the Wallamattagul peoples of the Dharug Nation, the Traditional Custodians of the land on which this podcast is created. My ADHD Assessment: Can the Van Dammage Be Undone?

🎙️ Episode 4 – My ADHD Assessment: Can the Van Dammage Be Undone? Getting assessed for ADHD as an adult isn’t just about answering a questionnaire. It’s like suddenly being handed the director’s cut of your own life — with all the deleted scenes, bloopers, and stunts finally making sense. In this episode, I share the story of my ADHD assessment and the strange mix of relief, grief, and clarity that followed. What was the outcome? 👉 And can the 'Van Dammage' of years without a diagnosis ever really be undone? Join me as I kick through the chaos, look back at the moments that shaped me, and reflect on what it means to finally have a name for the fight I’ve been in all along.

🎙️ Episode 3 – The Poshest Crime Ever What do fitted sheets, punk rock and a drunken 'crime' have in common? ADHD. Bloody Hell… I Think I’m ADHD! Seeing My Life Through a New Lens

🎙️ Episode 1 – Bloody Hell… I Think I’m ADHD! In this first episode, I share what it’s been like to realise—possibly way too late—that I might have ADHD. It’s not a polished or expert story. It’s just me, trying to make sense of the weird, emotional, and sometimes unexpectedly funny in-between stage: after the “could this be ADHD?” moment, but before any kind of formal diagnosis. Some say you shouldn’t talk about ADHD until it’s confirmed. I get that. But this podcast isn’t about answers—it’s about the messy middle. The confusion, the overthinking, the “wait... has it always been like this?” kind of stuff. That’s where I’m at. And if you’re somewhere similar, maybe this makes you feel a little less alone. --- 🪶 Acknowledgement of Country This episode was recorded on the lands of the Wallamattegal Clan of the Dharug Nation. I pay respect to Elders past and present, and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples listening. I acknowledge the strength and resilience of the oldest surviving culture on Earth, whose knowledge systems offer powerful ways of understanding the world—including the many ways minds can work. --- 💡 Recognition of Lived Experience If you’ve ever been called lazy, difficult, too sensitive, too much—or just felt like you didn’t quite fit—your story matters. This podcast is about finding language for experiences that never quite made sense until now… and maybe laughing a little along the way. --- 🧠 The Straw That Broke the Camel’s Brain A stressful moment at an international airport became the final nudge—the moment I couldn’t explain away anymore. Executive dysfunction showed up loud and clear, and for once, I noticed. > “In that moment, my brain picked the wrong emergency. It always has.” --- 👟 The Suede Saga One small scuff on a shoe. Two months of YouTube tutorials, indecision, and accidental destruction. I didn’t mean to turn it into a saga—but welcome to my brain. --- “Have you ever felt like you don’t belong...?” I talk about shame, pressure, and trying to hold it all together on the outside—even when things inside feel like a constant scramble. --- 💌 Want to Share Something?
