The Art of Loving Brick Wall Problems
Anton Bogdanov
Bio
Anton Bogdanov is the founder and CEO of veryfair, an AI platform that brings modern valuation to specialty assets like paintings, gemstones, aircraft, and patents. He spent nearly two decades in the arts and collectibles world, handled over half a billion dollars in transactions, and his market insights have been featured on Nasdaq, CBS, and USA Today. Anton also spends a lot of time thinking about founders themselves. He has worn many hats inside venture ecosystems and has advised a growing number of ArtTech startups. That's given him a front row seat to how founders actually think, struggle, and build in the earliest and messiest stages. His own path to being a founder followed no playbook. It runs through auction houses, international trade forums, and the FBI's Stolen Art File. Which is probably why he thinks the best founders never follow one either.

Throughout the discussion, we explore the essential qualities of resilience and vulnerability that are paramount for founders navigating the tumultuous landscape of entrepreneurship. Ultimately, this episode serves as a repository of hard-won lessons, illuminating the complexities of rebuilding a legacy industry.

The interaction between Jothy Rosenberg and Anton Bogdanov unveils a rich tapestry of insights into the intricacies of the art, antiques, and auction industries, illuminating the profound experiences that shaped Anton’s entrepreneurial journey. From his nascent years assisting his immigrant parents in their clothing business to his ventures in commodity brokering, Anton's early exposure to the world of commerce laid a solid foundation for his future endeavors. Through a series of calculated pivots, he honed his understanding of valuation and authentication, crucial elements that later informed his vision for VeryFair, a startup dedicated to addressing systemic inefficiencies within the art and collectibles market.
As the conversation unfolds, Anton recounts the pivotal moments in his career, particularly his nine-year tenure at a burgeoning auction house, where he witnessed firsthand the operational and ethical challenges prevalent in the industry. This experience not only reinforced his desire to innovate but also highlighted the necessity of integrating human expertise with technological advancements in valuation processes. Anton asserts a compelling argument for the symbiosis of AI and human insight, emphasizing that while automation may streamline operations, the nuanced understanding of seasoned professionals remains irreplaceable. His perspective offers a refreshing lens through which to view the evolving landscape of asset valuation, particularly in a world increasingly dominated by technology.
In addition to discussing the operational aspects of his business, the dialogue delves into the psychological resilience required of founders. Anton candidly shares his experiences with anxiety and the importance of cultivating both vulnerability and confidence in the face of adversity. This duality, he argues, is essential for navigating the tumultuous waters of entrepreneurship, where failures often serve as the crucible for growth. As he reflects on the lessons learned from his previous business failures, he articulates a profound truth: resilience is not an innate trait but a cultivated response to challenges. The episode culminates with actionable insights for aspiring founders, encouraging them to embrace their journeys, learn from their setbacks, and remain steadfast in their pursuit of innovation within their respective industries.
