A Southwest Love Story - Mountain View Hotel - Curly and Annie Neal
In the 1890s, the Neal family was one of the wealthiest self-made families in the Tucson area. No small feat considering the Neal’s were Black (Negro Mulatto’s) in a place where less than one-half of 1% of the people were Black or were of mixed-race with African and European, or Native American ancestry. William “Curly” and Annie Neal opened the Mountain View Hotel in Oracle in 1895. It was a luxury resort for people with tuberculosis and a respite for Tucsonans looking to escape the summer heat. Guests included celebrities, prominent business owners, and foreign dignitaries. Newspapers heralded the Neal’s business endeavors. This is their story.

Celebrating Tucson's Railroad History
Artist Bill Singleton has spent the past year researching Tucson's railroad history for his new mural at the Southern Arizona Transportation Museum. Titled “Arrival of the Railroad: The Mural That Tells the Multicultural Story.” The mural captures three key periods in the region's railroad history. Singleton notes, “The arrival of the train was pivotal for Tucson, transforming it from a small town into a growing city by making goods more accessible and boosting exports like copper and cotton. The mural, created in collaboration with the Tucson Chinese Cultural Center, The African American Museum of Southern Arizona, and the Tohono O’odham Nation, aims to accurately reflect this historical impact.
We were honored to have been asked to participate in this historical art piece. We based some of our information on community people – Sam Newsome – thank you Delano Price, Advisory Board member for your constant community and museum support!

Teaser: I Put That In. Willie Blake Conversation: Community Transformer, About Action
This conversation with Willie Blake Jr. took place on September 5, 2022. I was in Tucson for a meeting, visit family, and to learn.
I wanted to learn how do I get my name on a park while still alive without writing a BIG check or being maimed.
That’s my selfish reason for wanting to talk to Willie Blake Jr. The museum asked me to reach out to him. The museum has stories to tell.
Willie Blake Jr is here to tell a story about his journey from rural Arkansas to Tucson.
We discussed working within the unions to ensure truck drivers improved their stake in life.
Moving West because that’s where the opportunities were
Retiring and learning that his community wasn’t the safe place he thought it was.
Working to get over $6MM in grants to make changes to transform his community.
Everyone has a role in transforming the community.
The importance of land and being a good neighbor.
And I introduce him to Sir Bikes-A-Lot, my folding bike.
