Episode 25 - Keeping Momentum When Life Gets Heavy
What do you do when several areas of life start changing at the same time?
In this episode, I share a personal update on recent health challenges, including weight gain and the discovery of anemia, and how these have affected my energy, training, and daily life. I discuss the importance of adapting rather than stopping, using tools like functional training and a walking pad to keep moving forward.
I also reflect on the emotional weight of family uncertainty, career burnout, the possibility of working abroad, and the unexpected opportunity to return to teaching through new AI and productivity courses.
This is an honest conversation about resilience, adaptation, and maintaining momentum during periods of uncertainty. Sometimes progress is not about moving faster—it's simply about continuing to move.

Episode 24 - The Invisible Load: Stress and the Price Paid by the Body
A dentist visit revealed more than a tooth issue—it exposed the hidden impact of stress on my body. In this episode, I break down how stress led to weight gain, how travel amplifies instability, and how I’m regaining control through simplified nutrition, structured thinking, and consistent training.
Europe is aging rapidly, and countries like Portugal are at the forefront of this demographic transformation. As millions of people move into their 50s and 60s over the coming decade, an important question emerges: how will we age?
In this episode of Aging Strong with Hugo, we explore sarcopenia, the gradual loss of muscle mass and strength that begins earlier than most people realize. We also look at dynapenia, mobility decline, bone health, and how modern sedentary lifestyles accelerate physical deterioration.
More importantly, we discuss how functional training—including tools like kettlebells, steel maces, and movement-based strength—can help maintain mobility, resilience, and independence as we grow older.
Drawing from research, demographic trends in Europe and Portugal, and personal reflections from the journey behind the book 50 & Beyond: Transforming Through Functional Training as a Single Father, this episode explores what it means to age with capability rather than decline.
Because the real question is not whether we will grow older — but whether we will grow stronger or weaker with time.
