New Gene–Phenotype Catalogue Maps the Genetic Landscape of Premature Aging
Published 13 Oct 2026 · Transcript excerpt
[…] The authors note that nearly 500 pathogenic LMNA variants have been described, illustrating the striking phenotypic diversity that can arise from changes in a single gene. Why this catalog matters, the value of the study lies less in discovering a single new aging gene than in organizing existing knowledge into a framework that can be analyzed systematically. According to the authors, the catalogue represents to their knowledge the largest published collection of progeroid and related premature aging disorders to date, encompassing 144 genes, 56 syndromes, and 160 clinical entities. By standardizing gene terminology, linking genes with syndromes and clinical features, and then layering network analyses onto those relationships, the resource provides several complementary ways of examining the biology of premature aging.
