The Joy of Discovery: Echo of Ada Lovelace (Part 1 of 12)
The music box falls silent between one note and the next, and nine-year-old Ada, forbidden to touch it, lifts the lid to find out why.
Ada is supposed to be doing her sums by the window when her mother's music box stops mid-tune. She opens the rosewood case she was told never to touch and finds the cause: a single bent brass pin, jamming hundreds of others. As she counts the pins spiraling around the cylinder, something shifts in her head. The spacing of the pins is the melody. The numbers are the music. Her mother insists the two are separate things, mathematics is order and music is merely pleasant sound, but Ada cannot let go of what her fingertip felt. She leaves the room with a question instead of an answer: what else might be mathematics dressed up as magic?

The Path of Inquiry: Echo of Plato (1/12)
The Path of Inquiry: Echo of Plato (Part 1 of 12)
A ten-year-old boy, footsore from four days of climbing to Delphi, traces three words carved into the temple stone and asks aloud what they mean.
At the Temple of Apollo, the boy reads an old inscription glowing in the morning sun, know thyself, and two priests give him two different answers, one saying it teaches humility before the gods, the other that it commands us to examine our own souls. When his own father cannot say which priest is right, the boy stops believing what he is told, starts to watch his own thoughts, and begins a life spent asking questions.

The Stage of Life: Echo of William Shakespeare (1/12)
The Stage of Life: Echo of William Shakespeare (Part 1 of 12)
The Guildhall smells wrong, and nine-year-old Will clutches his father's gown as strangers haul benches and trunks across the floor where the aldermen usually sit.
Leicester's Men have come to Stratford with one wagon. A few trunks. Cloth and metal and wood. The boy cannot understand it. Where do they keep their castles, their forests, their walls? Then a player raises his hands to the bare timber and speaks, and Will looks up and sees stars above him where there is only roof. The actor James Burbage turns toward the benches and finds the boy's eyes, and for one breath Will is no longer watching. He is inside the story. They brought nothing, and they made a world. He walks home that evening with one question rising in him: could anyone learn to do that?
