OASIS SecondSky™: Innovative cover film for growing crops in hot climates
In this episode of the Agriplastics Community Podcast, we explore OASIS SecondSky™, an innovative cover film designed to help growers manage crops in hot climates by reducing heat stress while maintaining the light plants need for photosynthesis. Hosted by Darius Ford, this conversation features Nicholas Augsburger, Director of Product and Growth at iyris (https://iyris.com/), the company behind SecondSky™ technology, developed in collaboration with Armando Alvarez Group under the OASIS umbrella brand. Throughout the episode, we discuss the main challenges growers face in warm regions, especially in berry production: excessive heat, high radiation, water demand, fruit quality, labor pressure, and the need to maintain productivity under increasingly demanding climate conditions. Nicholas explains how OASIS SecondSky™ works as a "smart shade" solution: filtering sunlight to block part of the near-infrared radiation that contributes to heat stress, while allowing high transmission of photosynthetically active light. The episode also covers field results, temperature reduction during peak heat hours, the role of data-driven validation, grower experiences, operational benefits, recyclability, and the potential of this technology beyond berries and across different markets. If you are interested in protected agriculture, agricultural plastics, climate adaptation, crop quality, or technologies that help growers produce more efficiently in hot environments, this episode offers a practical look at how cover films can become a key tool for the future of farming. Solar Shrink®: a revolutionary new generation of mulch
In this episode, we welcome a very special guest: Solar Shrink® (https://www.solarshrink.com/), the technology redefining agricultural mulching. Today, we sit down with its creators, Mark and Robert Trenchard, to explore how this solution is transforming crop performance and field efficiency. Learn how this innovative idea came to life, what major challenges it solves compared to traditional mulch films, and why its unique design allows the plastic to shrink in a controlled way under solar radiation, creating a tight, uniform fit to the soil. We discuss strength, installation, machinery compatibility, sustainability, and the direct benefits farmers are experiencing in real production systems. We also address some of the most frequently asked questions from one of our recent webinars: Can it be installed inside a greenhouse? Does it work on flat soil or only on raised beds? Can it be installed manually? What real-world results are growers reporting? If you want to understand how technologies like Solar Shrink® are shaping the future of agricultural mulching, making it more efficient, lighter, and more sustainable, this episode is for you. Beyond the color of mulch
In this episode, we’ll talk about how to efficiently manage solar radiation with the different mulch colors (clear, black, white on black, silver on black, green photoselective…), how it can affect the color selection of the exposed surface to your crops. Our guest is Javier Pery, an expert in mulch from Spain with more than 10 years of experience in this field. Some of the questions we answer: Given that range of colors, what are the benefits of clear mulch in crops? Or when would it be advisable to use a clear mulch in a crop? Examples of crop type or climatic conditions ideal for White on black mulch What is the relationship between mulch color and how long it can stay in the field itself?
