Episode 49: The Economy Doesn't Need a Terminator to Break Because of AI
A paper claims the top 20% of earners drive nearly 60% of U.S. consumer spending. Matt checked. Moody's puts the top 10% closer to 49%, and the paper hasn't been peer reviewed.
That still matters. The paper's real argument is uncomfortable: banks, mortgages, and consumer spending all assume white-collar thinking stays scarce and well paid. Remove that, and nothing has to become superintelligent for things to break.
Then Jason and Matt split. Jason says AI efficiency drags prices down, and a 30% pay cut stings less if living costs fall by half. Matt says prices rise. When buyer agents and seller agents negotiate, prices go up because they can. Jason calls that collusion, and unlikely.
Matt asks whether AI is the jet engine or just a bigger airplane. Jason's answer: neither. It's flight itself.
The author's own conclusion: these are policy choices, not technological inevitabilities.
The risk isn't AI failing. It's what breaks when it works.

Episode 48: When Does Hoping for the Best on AI Stop Being a Plan?
A departing AI researcher says the quiet part out loud. Anthropic is racing because it believes no one else will act responsibly. Matt Konwiser has heard that logic from powerful people before, and it rarely ends well for everyone else.
Guest Jim Gehring, founder of Foundation and creator of the Strategic Growth Engine, says AI isn't the real problem. The problem is what it lands on: pressure to move fast, governance nobody enforces, and labs heading toward IPOs where shareholders take control. Speed is easy to measure. Direction isn't.
Jason Lowe doesn't think anyone can slow this down. No regulator can punish anyone. The US and China won't sit at the same table. And AGI still feels hypothetical in a way Hiroshima never did. Jim calls "survival of the fittest" an excuse, not an explanation.
Nobody wins this argument. Both sides agree the outlook is bad. They split on whether a first step still matters.

Episode 47: We Hold AI Science To A Standard Humans Never Meet
ChatGPT proposed adding an extra oxygen source to a reaction that already pulls oxygen from air. PhD chemists looked at it and said no, that's not how it's done, you'll spawn side reactions and make a mess. The team ran it anyway. Yield went from 16.6% to 25.2%.
Piotr Byrski, co-founder of Molecule.one, built his lab in 2022 with AI as the intended user, before most people had heard the term agentic AI. The number worth holding onto isn't the discovery. It's the volume behind it: roughly 10,000 reactions in three months for the published result, about 30,000 across all four proposals. A bench chemist reaches that count in about a decade.
One more figure to sit with. Expert chemists predict whether an experiment will succeed at 60 to 65 percent. Guessing at random, balanced, gets you 50.
We keep asking whether AI discoveries are genuinely novel, and yet almost nobody asks that about the human ones.
