AIR is an interview podcast series with a different theme each episode.
Created in 2017, AIR aims to be something different in the wide world of music journalism. Tired of the usual promotional fluff, host Emma Robertson invites artists, DJs, and musicians to get deep on one topic that inspires them — everything from nature, to film, to spirituality — in the hope that it inspires you, too.
This month, I met up with DJ, producer, and label boss Jen Cardini, for what has become an increasingly rare face to face interview, taking place at Soho House here in Berlin. A DJ for over 30 years, Jen is a master of connecting, moving dancefloors, and taking dancers on a journey, pulling from all kinds of genres and influences, never tied down by labels but always rooted in warmth and energy. For Jen, DJing and dance music in general is all about self-expression, something they discovered for the first time playing for queer parties like Le Pulp in Paris, as well as in Berlin…. This episode delves into generosity, community, and the trust built up from true self-expression.

AIR 086 / Grace Sands live at Dimensions Festival 2025
This month’s episode comes from a recording from Dimensions Festival last year, where I am lucky enough to be invited to host a series of live talks on site. You’ll find me back at the festival this year hosting talks at The Haze stage on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, so please come say hello!
Last year it was our deep pleasure to host a UK icon, the inimitable DJ and producer Grace Sands. What follows is a recording of our live conversation, made possible by our friends at The Mudd Show. I hope you enjoy listening and I hope to see you all back at dimensions next month.
And finally some news: my book BREAKTHROUGH is out in the world! BREAKTHROUGH is an interview project I’ve been working on for the past four years, and speaking with artists about the seminal records they’ve made, from idea to production to release, and all the changes that come along with your first success. It’s been a very wild ride. The book’s final form features 20 interviews and clocks in at nearly 300 pages; I see it as a tool for musicians and artists of all kinds, but for me its also a meditation on the creative act and a refuge for makers when things get tough.

AIR 085 / Voices from the Lake
My guests for AIR's 85th episode are none other than @donato-dozzy and @neel, also known as Voices from the Lake.
Each beloved producers and DJs in their own right, Donato and Neel have been bound together by music since the earliest days of their friendship, and Voices from the Lake is the logical continuation of that union, part improvisation, part dialogue, all trust. Forged for what was meant to be a one-time-only live showcase for @mindgameslaby in Japan, their closing set would form the basis of one of the most renowned ambient techno albums, their self-titled debut Voices from the Lake. Their follow up album, simply titled II, was released last year, over a decade since the first but well worth the wait. It’s not a remake, but rather a completely new dimension that speaks to their growth as artists.
In this conversation, we’re looking back at Voices from the Lake, the project’s evolution, their deep connection as friends and collaborators, and the milestones that still mean so much to them.
