Amos Gitai on Art, War and the Power of Ideas - 306 - Alain Elkann Interviews

Amos Gitai, the acclaimed 75-year-old Israeli architect-turned-filmmaker known for his politically charged and deeply reflective documentaries, premiered his latest work, The Road to Jericho, out of competition at the 2026 International Venice Film Festival. The 75-minute film chronicles the struggle of a Bedouin community in the occupied West Bank village of Khan al-Ahmar, weaving together 40 years of archival footage with contemporary reflections. True to his signature style, Gitai presents the documentary as a "civic gesture" aimed at preserving collective memory and challenging established narratives, rather than offering easy answers to a deeply entrenched conflict. "I find myself in a delicate position, holding contradictory thoughts in a dramatic and tragic moment." "Symbolic power matters, because reality does not change only through money and machine guns. It also changes through ideas, and we have to speak about ideas." "Sometimes human beings understand, after a great conflict, that perhaps they have something better to do with their lives. Let's hope." https://www.alainelkanninterviews.com/amos-gitai-7/

Colum McCann: Why Storytelling Matters More Than Ever - 305 - Alain Elkann Interviews

FINDING JOY IN DESOLATION Colum McCann's eight novels and three collections of short stories have been published in over forty languages and received some of the world's most prestigious literary awards and honours, including the National Book Award for his novel Let the Great World Spin in 2009. His novel TransAtlantic was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2013, and his most recent work, Apeirogon, also longlisted for the Man Booker Prize, is an international bestseller on four continents. "Storytelling is the thing we have between us that is perhaps the most profound, the closest thing to God that I can recognise." "Writing is a little like being a musician who wants to learn different instruments." "I love being out in the world, listening to people, travelling. Then I have to come indoors, close the door and shut everything out."
