Special Guests Kathleen Navarre, ASAA and Jamie & Jeff Darby North Pole Flag Football Head Coaches
Brad Lauwers hosts a discussion about flag football with special guests Kathleen Navarre from ASAA and Jamie from North Pole High School. The conversation covered the history of flag football in Alaska, starting in 2006 when it was added to address Title IX compliance, and the evolution of the sport from its early days to the current sanctioned state tournaments. Kathleen explained how the sport expanded from eight Anchorage schools to include Fairbanks and Valley schools, leading to the establishment of state championships three years ago in Wasilla. Jamie and her coaching partner Jeff discussed their recent state championship victory, their unique offensive plays including a Boise State-style hook and lateral, and the challenges of coaching in North Pole's harsh weather conditions. The discussion also covered travel experiences between Fairbanks and Anchorage teams, the financial challenges of non-conference play, and potential future tournament formats including a proposed jamboree-style tournament. The broadcast concluded with updates on upcoming D1, D2, and D3 football semifinals, as well as brief mentions of other sports including UA volleyball and UAA men's basketball.
