Episode 69: Network with Jes Cook and Kyle Perrone

On the sixty- fifth episode of All the Film Things, producer/ assistant director Jes Cook and filmmaker Kyle Perrone join me for an analytical discussion about Sidney Lumet’s 1976 satirical black comedy drama film Network in celebration of the film’s 50th anniversary and in honor of Robert Duvall! This episode is spoiler-filled. Network is one of the most fascinating films to come from the New Hollywood era, which was on the decline at the time of the film’s release, because much of what is said and even preached has come true over the past fifty years. The film is centered around a network news station that is at an impasse. The news division isn’t profitable, the news station staff including evening news anchor Howard Beale (Peter Finch) as everything about reporting the horrors of reality leaves them bored and sad. When Howard goes on an explicit rant and proclaims he will kill himself on air, everyone wakes up including the head of the news division and Howard’s longtime friend Max (William Holden). As this shift is happening, Diana Christiansen (Faye Dunaway) with the help of Frank Hackett (Robert Duvall), slowly turn the news into entertainment in order to boost ratings and profits. And with that comes pure chaos, that for younger audiences plays as reflective of reality but was seen as preposterous satire to those watching the film fifty years ago. Network went on to win four of the ten Academy Awards it was nominated for, including Best Actress for Faye Dunaway and a posthumous Best Supporting Actor trophy for Peter Finch. Jes and Kyle recently worked together on an action/ comedy short film titled “The White Ibis” that revolves around a young man determined to deliver a sandwich in order to prove himself to his tough boss. Jes was the producer and production manager and Kyle wore even more hats on this production as he directed, produced, shot, and edited the film. The 15-minute short premiered at the LA Comedy Film Festival this past May and recently was one of a few short films that screened at the August IndieJax event. “The White Ibis” can next be seen at the Golden Isles Film Festival (https://giff26.eventive.org/films/6aa5b95b2985d7d00d9e8d18) in Georgia, which will be held between October 22- 25, and will be widely available to watch by the end of this year. Learn more and stay updated on the short by following them both Jes (https://www.instagram.com/jeslikesart?xtok=MXZhYjZiMXQ1aDlwNw==) and Kyle (https://www.instagram.com/kyle_perrone?vrfl=aWtneTNhZnBibDR4) on Instagram. This is both Jes and Kyle’s first appearances on ATFT. Jes and I went to the same schools growing up and we have a longtime mutual friend in attorney Katherine Jakeway, whose been a previous guest on ATFT a few times. I had never spoken to Kyle before recording but he's been an active member on the ATFT Instagram community, which I greatly appreciate. After revisiting Network at the end of last year, I knew I had to record an episode about it so this has been a film I have long been looking forward to discussing. It's a film that deeply fascinates and, though I sadly feel as though I didn't quite rise to the occasion here, I hope to record another episode surrounding the film in the future. This episode was recorded on September 17, 2026. In this episode, Jes, Kyle, and I analyze how differently we as a younger audience view the film’s satire compared to those who first saw the film in 1976, wonder if Max did all he could to help (or rather save) Howard Beale, and point out the film’s funniest moments. Tangents in this episode include discussing Henry Fonda (who turned down the role of Max Schumacher), the importance of physical media, and the Shrek movies while concluding the episode. Episode 68: Interview with Dave Karger

On the sixty-eighth episode of All the Film Things, I had the pleasure of interviewing Dave Karger! Dave Karger is an award-winning TCM host/ film expert/ author who’s been an integral and beloved figure in the film industry for over 30 years now. Helmed by The Wrap as “this generation’s mass media ambassador”, Dave has built an impressive career seamlessly moving from print to television. In his 17 years writing for Entertainment Weekly, Dave wrote over 50 cover stories whilst covering the Oscars, which earned him the clever title of “Oscarologist”. During this time he became the resident Oscars expert on the TODAY Show and has now appeared on the morning show more than 200 times. Dave was awarded the Publicist Guild Award in 2015 for his stellar work as an entertainment journalist. In 2018, Dave became a full time host on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) where he can regularly be found introducing classic films, especially every Saturday at 12 pm EST when he hosts “Musical Matinees”. His excellent first book, 50 Oscar Nights: Iconic Stars & Filmmakers on their Career- Defining Wins (https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/dave-karger/50-oscar-nights/9780762486328/?lens=running-press) was published in 2024 and he’s now releasing his second! Dave’s second book, 50 Movie Nights: Contemporary Stars on Their Favorite Classic Films, was published by Running Press (https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/dave-karger/50-movie-nights/9798894142210/?lens=running-press) last week on September 15. The book features new interviews from 50 beloved stars and public figures from Scarlett Johansson to Paul Rudd to Bob Mackie sharing a classic film that has great personal resonance. It’s a fantastic and enjoyable read so you absolutely should buy your copy now wherever books are sold, including Barnes & Noble (https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/50-movie-nights-dave-karger/1149187887?ean=9798894142210) and Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/50-Movie-Nights-Contemporary-Favorite/dp/B0GF1DXV9X/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0). This is Dave’s first appearance on ATFT! I am a longtime regular viewer of TCM, the best channel on television if you ask me, so I often watch and learn from Dave’s introductions and conclusions of classic films on. When the news broke about Dave’s new book, I was instantly looking forward to reading it because the concept was intriguing and one that I have taken to heart through this podcast for over four years now. No matter the format, each episode is connected through a shared passion of cinema and it’s fascinating to learn about the films loved by the stars we admire. I greatly appreciate Dave for taking the time for this interview and Seta Zink for setting this interview up and allowing me this opportunity that I have long been striving for. This episode was recorded on September 2, 2026. In this episode, Dave shares how his admiration for one of his longtime favorite films Children of a Lesser God (1986) has grown through rewatches, how a few paparazzi photos led to him briefly being Angelina Jolie’s “mystery man”, and what makes his new book 50 Movie Nights stand out from other TCM books. Dave also fondly reminisces about his nearly two decades writing for Entertainment Weekly and teases his third book. All this and much more on the latest episode of All the Film Things! Episode 67: Interview with Todd Roobin

On the sixty- seventh episode of All the Film Things, I had the pleasure of interviewing the Film Commissioner for the City of Jacksonville, Todd Roobin! As Jacksonville’s Film Commissioner, Todd Roobin, has been the leading charge behind Jacksonville film industry and overseen the many productions that have filmed in and around the city for 40 years. Todd, who was born and raised in the Bold City, began working in the Jacksonville’s film and television office in 1986, which was established just five years prior. He has been integral in bringing production rooms big and small to the region including Hollywood productions, The Devil’s Advocate and Lonely Hearts, ever since. He was previously chairman of the Florida Film and Entertainment advisory board and a founding member of Film Florida, even serving as president from 2001 to 2005, and is still an active member and co- chair of their legislative committee. This past March, Todd was honored by the City of Jacksonville with a career service pin to celebrate his four decades of facilitating all kinds of productions and highlighting the local workforce. Previous guest Art Smith jr. has largely credited Todd for making Jacksonville’s film and television office amongst the very best he’s ever seen. The Jacksonville Film and Television Office, whose motto is “a world of locations in one city”, is to act as a liaison between the local government, the production company, and local film community as well as facilitate permits and create jobs. Since 2020, the film and television office has permitted and assisted over 418 productions resulting in hiring 7,800 cast and crew, having direct economic impact of $42.6 million which includes industry multiplier 2.57. Go to FilmJax.com (http://FilmJax.com) to learn all the details about filming in and around the city! For those based in Jacksonville, be sure to fill out an application to be included in the city's production guide by clicking here (https://www.filmjax.com/production-guide). This is Todd’s first appearance on ATFT! After hearing about him through the years, we only got connected this Spring after getting a random phone call from him one afternoon. The next month, we finally met in person when he led a fantastic event for Women and Film and Television (WIFT) Jacksonville alongside previous ATFT guest and the Film Production Coordinator for the city Adam Madrid about filming in Jacksonville. I asked him a few weeks later if I could interview him for my podcast sometime soon and he immediately said yes. I had seen him give interviews on the news before so I assumed this would be one of the many interviews he’s given but, when I started preparing for it, I realized Todd hasn’t really given an in- depth interview. This episode was recorded on August 20, 2026. In this episode, Todd reflects on his road to becoming Jacksonville’s Film Commissioner while looking back on his 40 years in office by sharing star- studded stories like dining with Burt Reynolds and spending the day with Charlize Theron. He also shares important information about Jacksonville’s growing film scene, why filmmakers from around the world should bring their productions to the city, and if he hopes to reach 50 years as Jacksonville’s Film Commissioner.
