Rethinking Engineering Education: Workload, Equity, and Student Success

What does it take to build an engineering education system where both students and faculty can thrive? In this episode of All Things STEM, host Dr. Frank A. Gomez welcomes Dr. Corin “Corey” L. Bowen, Assistant Professor of Engineering Education at Cal State LA, for a thought-provoking conversation about faculty workload, educational equity, student success, and institutional change. Dr. Bowen discusses the challenges of balancing teaching, research, and student mentorship while examining how traditional educational structures can create barriers for students and faculty alike. The conversation explores innovative approaches to engineering education, including the Eco-STEM initiative, student-led research, and the importance of building more inclusive and supportive learning environments. Together, they consider how higher education can move beyond traditional models to create meaningful opportunities for students, empower faculty, and prepare future engineers to make a positive impact on society.

Cracks in the System: Bob Brown on the Future of Research Universities

In this episode of All Things STEM, host Dr. Frank A. Gomez speaks with Dr. Robert A. Brown, President Emeritus of Boston University, about the growing pressures facing America’s research universities. Drawing from his experience as a researcher, university president, former MIT provost, and national leader in higher education, Brown explains why current funding challenges point to deeper structural problems within the research university system. The conversation explores how the partnership between universities and the federal government helped build the U.S. research enterprise over the past 75 years, and how that relationship has gradually weakened. Brown discusses the increasing amount universities must contribute from their own resources to support federally funded research, creating tension between research investments and priorities such as tuition affordability, student success, and changing enrollment demographics. Dr. Brown and Dr. Gomez also examine the rapid growth in the number of R1 universities and whether the classification still represents research quality and intensity. Brown argues that universities will need to become more strategic about where they invest, focusing resources on areas where they can achieve meaningful research excellence while continuing to provide strong educational opportunities across disciplines. The discussion turns to one of Brown's biggest concerns: the research talent pipeline. Reduced funding and uncertainty surrounding research careers could affect graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, early-career researchers, and international talent for years to come. Brown emphasizes that the United States' ability to attract talented researchers from around the world has played an important role in its scientific and economic leadership. The episode also highlights the value of undergraduate research, which gives students opportunities to work on questions without predetermined answers and develop creativity, curiosity, and problem-solving skills. Looking toward the future, Brown calls for universities to collaborate more deeply by sharing research facilities, computing resources, faculty expertise, and even academic programs. He encourages institutions to experiment with new models rather than trying to maintain every research area independently. Ultimately, Brown argues that sustaining America's research leadership will require universities to make deliberate choices about their strengths, build partnerships, protect the talent pipeline, and remain places where researchers and students from around the world want to learn, discover, and create.

The Quiet Crisis: Student Mental Health, Social Anxiety, and the Future of College Success

In “The Quiet Crisis: Student Mental Health, Social Anxiety, and the Future of College Success,” host Dr. Frank A. Gomez speaks with Dr. Amanda Morrison, Professor of Psychology at California State University, East Bay, about the mental health challenges many college students experience quietly and often without drawing attention. Dr. Morrison explains how depression, anxiety, social anxiety, loneliness, trauma, and life stress can appear through withdrawal, avoidance, missed classes, limited participation, or a reluctance to ask for help. The conversation also examines the growing influence of social media and self-diagnosis, including the importance of recognizing genuine distress without treating every uncomfortable experience as a clinical disorder. The episode highlights practical ways faculty and campuses can support student well-being by creating low-pressure opportunities for connection, building stronger classroom communities, encouraging students to face manageable challenges, and helping them develop confidence through experience. Dr. Morrison also discusses the role of kindness, belonging, human connection, and technology in shaping the future of student success. This thoughtful conversation reminds listeners that supporting mental health requires more than counseling services. It requires empathy, prevention, community, and a campus-wide commitment to helping students feel seen, supported, and capable of succeeding.
