Always Choose Orange

About Always Choose Orange

Always Choose Orange began 13.8 billion years ago as a tiny piece of the infinitely small, hot, and dense singularity that contained all the mass and matter in the universe. Since then, it has been expanding rapidly with no signs of slowing down. The show provides actionable ways to develop and maintain a thriving creative process. Tune in each week for a mix of short teachings and long conversations with creators across a wide array of mediums including musicians, authors, painters, photographers, YouTubers, and yes, even regenerative grain farmers. Expect a blend of powerful exercises, tips, thought-provoking stories, textual analysis, and new perspectives — all with a major focus on craft.

   #98: Analogue Doomscrolling

Have you ever grabbed your phone to respond to a text message, only to look up an hour later after getting swept into a hazy deluge of political arguments, LLM-written articles about the future of AI, and cringey videos of people dancing? In today’s episode, we explore the idea of “analogue doomscrolling,” an alternative to the algorithmically determined torrent of information and negativity that’s freely available on news sites and social media feeds at any given moment. What if, instead of endlessly scrolling through a screen, we redirected that urge to wander toward the physical world? If you’re looking for a way to satisfy your curiosity, get creatively inspired, escape the algorithm, and remain rooted in the world around you, this brief odyssey into the wide world of knowledge may be exactly what you’re looking for. #97: Audience Expectations | Part 1: The Apotheosis of the Secretary Bird

Around 50 minutes into the 2024 animated film Flow, something completely unexpected happens. I won’t tell you what it is (I don’t want to spoil the movie for anyone who hasn’t seen it) but it serves as a fascinating reminder of why, as creatives, we need to pay close attention to the expectations we’re setting and the way we’re preparing our audience for what they’re about to experience. In this episode, we’ll examine that moment, explore how it changes the experience of the film as a whole, and consider one simple question that can help us avoid making the same mistake in our own art.

#96: Favorite Reads of 2026 | Part 1 (with Andrew Drake)

My brother Andrew is in the house and (of course) we’re talking about books! In this episode, the two of us reflect back on what we’ve read so far in 2026 and use the following questions as a guide: Which book surprised you the most? What is the most ambitious book you read this year? Which book had the best prose? What is one book that made you cry? Which book impacted your life the most? What was your personal favorite? Throughout the 1.5 hour conversation, we venture off the beaten path and explore a variety of topics including mystery, meditation, neuroscience, fish tank design, the key to reading old books, minimalism, empathy, and a fascinating A.I. prompt we used to learn more about our individual writing style preferences.
