Audiences knew Charlton Heston as Moses, Ben-Hur, and a commanding presence on the silver screen. Beyond Hollywood, he was a veteran, civil rights advocate, and outspoken conservative willing to put his reputation behind his convictions.
In this episode of American Considerations, Jason Curtman explores Heston’s military service, participation in the March on Washington, political journey, and defense of the Second Amendment. His poignant public announcement about symptoms consistent with Alzheimer’s disease reveals a gentler side of that familiar strength.
A reflection on citizenship, personal responsibility, and the character that remains after the applause fades.

From Milk Bottles To Barcodes
There was a time when the milkman left bottles at the door, the newspaper boy knew where you wanted the paper, and salesmen carrying cases of household goods actually knocked and introduced themselves.
In this episode of American Considerations, Jason Curtman looks back at the changing culture of home delivery in America, including his own experience selling Fuller Brush products door to door. For a time, home delivery seemed destined to disappear. Instead, it came roaring back in a completely different form.
Today, groceries, meals, medicine, electronics, furniture, and nearly anything else can arrive at our homes with the touch of a screen. Even the old-fashioned milkman hasn’t completely vanished.
We’ve gained remarkable convenience. But along the way, the American front porch changed from a place for neighbors, conversation, and unexpected visitors into something resembling the home’s loading dock.
The porch may be busier than ever. It’s just a whole lot quieter.

A Madman’s Prediction
Twenty years ago, anyone predicting today’s cultural debates might have been dismissed as a madman. Americans would never have believed that biological reality, parental authority, free speech, artificial companionship, and even the meaning of truth would become subjects of national controversy.
In this episode of American Considerations, we imagine a visitor from the future warning Americans about the world awaiting them. His predictions sound absurd, frightening, and impossible. Yet one by one, they become part of everyday American life.
How did ideas once considered unthinkable become accepted, celebrated, and eventually expected? The answer may be found in the small cultural concessions made while most people were not paying attention.
Perhaps the man from the future was never the crazy one. Perhaps we are.
