[…] It's inland. about 10 to 12 miles from where the Atlantic breaks. So what are these early settlements in Beaufort like? Well, the earliest settlements were cattle and deerskins trading with the Indians. Now we're talking about the late 1600s. There was a man named Thomas Nairn, who was one of the Scots, Scottish man who was one of the early settlers here. And he and John Barnwell are generally credited with founding Beaufort in 1711, uh, founding the town of Beaufort. And so, um, Nairn was, uh, uh, an Indian trader. He met a horrible fate when the, uh, Yemesee Indians rose up on Good Friday in April of 1715. […]
