How Media, Access, and the Need to Fit In Normalize Teen Substance Use
Peer pressure around substances can start long before high school, and it doesn’t always sound like pressure. Kaylee, Breton, and Tessa share how vaping became more visible among teens, why fitting in can make it harder to say no, and how these experiences shape the choices young people face.
From classmates offering a vape at a hangout to substance use showing up as a way to cope with school stress, the three students reflect on the situations where pressure can build. They compare what they noticed in middle school and high school, and consider how greater access, media, and changing ideas about what’s “cool” can make substance use feel increasingly normal.
You’ll hear their perspectives on why the jump to a larger, less closely watched school can change the sense of freedom teens feel, how peer groups influence decisions, and why substance use can become part of a cycle of stress and belonging. They also look at the role of marketing, from the history of cigarette advertising to the way vaping is presented in public.
These are personal experiences, not universal rules. This conversation is an invitation for teens, families, and educators to think more carefully about the pressures young people encounter and how to respond with honesty and understanding.
