Ancient Astronauts

About Ancient Astronauts

What if the gods of ancient myth were never gods at all? Ancient Astronauts explores the theory that advanced extraterrestrial beings influenced early human civilization. Hosted by Ben Carter, each episode investigates ancient temples, sacred texts, unexplained artifacts, and cosmic alignments through a structured, documentary-style approach. Examining the evidence, patterns, and records, the series explores ideas often linked to conspiracy theories and forbidden knowledge. Sodom and Gomorrah: Did an Ancient Catastrophe Become a Story of Divine Weapons?

Tall el-Hammam, an excavated Bronze Age settlement in Jordan’s lower Jordan Valley, contains a major Middle Bronze Age destruction horizon and a subsequent interruption in occupation. In 2021, researchers proposed that a cosmic airburst destroyed the site around 1650 BCE and cautiously speculated that a remembered catastrophe may have contributed to the later Sodom tradition in Genesis. The claim became widely compressed into a dramatic headline: a meteor destroyed Sodom. But the excavation record, the proposed airburst, the identification of Tall el-Hammam as Sodom, and the Genesis connection are separate questions with different kinds of evidence. This investigation follows the physical layer beneath the site, the samples that turned destruction into an airburst hypothesis, the 2022 scientific critique, corrected figures, the journal’s 2023 expression of concern, the 2025 retraction, and the later defense of the cosmic interpretation. What does the ground establish—and what remains unproven? This podcast uses artificial intelligence in its research, writing, production, and narration. Puma Punku: Were These Precision Stones Made With Lost Technology?

Puma Punku, part of Bolivia’s Tiwanaku archaeological complex near Lake Titicaca, contains monumental sandstone slabs, carefully worked andesite, geometric channels, recessed surfaces, and the distinctive blocks often called H-blocks. Those surviving fragments have become central to claims of forgotten high technology, remote antiquity, and extraterrestrial assistance. But the archaeological record tells a more complicated story: a monument altered during construction, damaged and dispersed over time, documented unevenly by early visitors, and investigated through excavation, architectural analysis, dating, reconstruction, and remote sensing. This episode follows the documented work of researchers who surveyed visible ruins, photographed fragments, opened targeted trenches, dated construction contexts, modeled measured stones, and mapped buried features. What do Puma Punku’s stones reveal about Tiwanaku builders—and what questions still remain open? This podcast uses artificial intelligence in its research, writing, production, and narration. Pakal’s Tomb: Why Does the Mayan King Look Like He Is Piloting a Machine?

In 1952, archaeologist Alberto Ruz Lhuillier and his team reached a sealed royal burial chamber beneath Palenque’s Temple of the Inscriptions after years of clearing a concealed stairway. Inside stood the sarcophagus associated with the Maya ruler K’inich Janaab’ Pakal and its monumental carved limestone lid. In 1968, Erich von Däniken popularized a startling reading of the relief: Pakal, he argued, appeared to be an astronaut operating a spacecraft. The angled figure, apparent controls, projection near the face, and forms beneath the body have made the image one of the most recognizable artifacts in ancient-astronaut literature. Yet the lid came from a carefully constructed Maya royal tomb. Scholars including Mary Ellen Miller, along with the Penn Museum’s examination of the claim, interpret the carving through Palenque’s inscriptions, funerary architecture, and Maya imagery of royal death, renewal, maize-god associations, the underworld, and the World Tree. This episode follows the concealed stairway, the years of excavation, the chamber discovery, the burial context, von Däniken’s publication, the Copán caption discrepancy, and the evidence behind two competing readings of one extraordinary image.
