[…] Meanwhile, King Harold Godwinson, fresh from his victory at Stamford Bridge, marched his army south roughly 200 miles. Although some recent scholarship suggests he may have used ships to sail the army south. Harold stopped in London for about a week prior to marching further south to engage William, so as to muster his men. On the 13th of October, Harold left London and made camp on Caldbeck Hill, about eight miles from William's castle at Hastings. The exact size of the two armies is something of a mystery. Medieval figures seem to be exaggerated, and the range of figures given by modern historians tend to fall between the high thousands and the low ten thousands, with a numerical advantage for the Normans.
