Animal in the Machine is a weekly podcast exploring how animals, including us, live within the systems humans have created.
It’s a show about awareness, responsibility, and finding better ways to coexist.
A nine-hour drive to rescue eight pigs from a hoarding situation — each one with a name, a history, a distinct way of moving through the world — opens the final episode in our backyard and small-farm series, this time on pigs: some of the most cognitively and emotionally complex animals we raise for food.
We also look at 4-H and FFA market animal projects, where kids are taught to bond completely with an animal on a schedule that ends at auction, an ending most are shielded from witnessing.
We look at what pigs actually understand about that bond, a real case that ended in a search warrant, and how little oversight exists once "small and local" takes an animal out of view.
The setting changes. What's inside doesn't.

The Illusion of the Pasture
The people choosing local dairy and grass-fed beef are paying attention. They're spending more, reading labels, trying to make their choices mean something. That instinct is worth following — all the way through.
This episode traces the domestic cow from her wild ancestor, the aurochs, through centuries of selective breeding toward milk and meat, and into the realities that local and grass-fed labels don't show: the calf separated within hours of birth, the production cycle that keeps a cow continuously pregnant, the grass-fed standard the USDA quietly withdrew in 2016.
The goodwill is already there. This episode just asks where it goes from here.

The Illusion of the Backyard
Backyard chicken keeping has surged over the last two decades — driven by people who want to know where their food comes from and step away from industrial agriculture.
That instinct is right. But there's a question underneath the Saturday morning flock worth asking: what is the hen in the yard, actually?
The red junglefowl, her wild ancestor, lays 10 to 30 eggs a year.
The modern laying hen lays 250 to 300 — the result of the same selective breeding logic that built the factory farm.
The backyard may be better, but it is not outside the system.
This is episode one of a three-part series on backyard and local farming — and an invitation to follow the goodwill all the way through.
