“The omicron variant was in Europe a week before South Africa reported it”.
The omicron coronavirus variant was already in the Netherlands a week before South Africa reported the new variant to the World Health Organization, according to a Dutch health agency.
The variant was recently identified in retests of samples that were taken on Nov. 19 and 23, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, or RIVM, announced on Tuesday.
Revelations about the variant's existence in Europe before it was reported in Africa add a new twist to questions about where and how the variant originated — and whether travel bans on South Africa and its neighbors are an appropriate response to the variant.
South African officials raised the alarm about the heavily mutated variant, B.1.1.529, on Nov. 24. Two days later, the WHO classified it as a variant of concern and dubbed it omicron.
The global health agency says the variant poses a "very high" risk because its mutations could help it spread more easily — and possibly infect people who might otherwise be considered immune to previous variants.

The health agency said data pointed to an increase of myocarditis and pericarditis among youths and young adults that had been vaccinated.
The health agency said it now recommended the Comirnaty vaccine from Pfizer/Biontech instead. People born 1991 or later that had received a first Moderna shot, some 81,000 people, would not get a second Moderna jab, it added.

[PODCAST NEWS : COVID-19 Screening Important During Cold, Flu Season] by Anida Azzahra
[NEWS SCRIPT] While the flu season hasn’t started yet, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit reminds you that we can expect more respiratory illnesses as students head back to school.
Federal health officials have also been warning that the school year and cooler weather lead to more indoor gatherings, which can speed up the spread of COVID-19, colds, and flu.
Even if you’re sure your child has a cold or the sniffles, Thunder Bay’s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Janet DeMille says it’s still important to screen daily for COVID-19 symptoms before school.
“The screening tool really focuses on symptoms that are very predictive of COVID,” she points out. “So, if you have any one of those symptoms, you should isolate and not go to school, or daycare or childcare for example, and get tested.”
DeMille says some symptoms, like a runny nose, are no longer considered a red flag for COVID-19 screening tools that students will use.
She reminds you that children with any respiratory illness should stay home until they feel better to avoid spreading a cold or flu through their daycare or school.
