Hello, and welcome to Another Story, a new podcast brought to you in friendship by the Scottish International Storytelling Festival. In this series we will be chatting with some wonderful storytellers, hearing their tales, and exploring different areas of storytelling in Scotland and beyond. So join us for another story…
Storyteller: Martyn Bennett and the Travellers' Stories
The music of the pioneering Scottish musician Martyn Bennett (http://martynbennett.com/) flowed with many inspirations. In particular, his final album Grit saw him draw upon the ballads and stories of Scotland's Travellers, famously sampling Sheila Stewart’s version of Ewan MacColl’s The Moving On Song to incredible effect.
In this live event recorded as part of the Scottish International Storytelling Festival we celebrated Martyn’s love of Traveller culture, whilst also exploring his wide use of world music through the Hindu Kali myths, in an evening with friends of Martyn’s and those still being inspired by his legacy today. Hosted by Gary West (https://www.garywest.scot/), with contributions from James MacDonald Reid (https://tracscotland.org/storytellers/james-macdonald-reid/), Gauri Raje (https://tracscotland.org/storytellers/gauri-raje/) and Jess Smith (https://www.jesssmith.co.uk/).
Recorded live from the Scottish Storytelling Centre on Thursday 30th Oct 2025.
