(#021) Chasing Illusions: the Mystique of Antarctic Mirages

Ever thought you had it all figured out, only to discover that life had a plot twist waiting for you? In this episode of Antarctica Did That For Me, we (your hosts, Keri Nelson and Cassa Grant) are diving into the world of mirages. Specifically, we explore Antarctic mirages, which are called Fata Morgana— tricky optical illusions that mess with your mind and make you see things that aren’t really there. You’ll hear all about how our expectations of Antarctica didn’t exactly match up with reality. (Spoiler alert: it’s not all penguins and glaciers.) We’ll also dish on the not-so-glamorous side of working with large government organizations like the US Antarctic Program—because, surprise, even the most “stable” systems can have their wobbly moments. But here’s the twist: when things don’t go as planned, that’s when the magic happens. This episode will make you rethink your own experiences and how unexpected detours might just be the best part of the journey. So… prepare to see Antarctica—and maybe even your own life—in a whole new light. Who knows? You might just find that the things that didn’t go as planned were exactly what you needed.
