   Voces No Humanas

Podcasting the Anthropocene: A Discussion With Long-Term Audio Producer Michael Osborne

Michael Osborne is the host of the Generation Anthropocene podcast (https://www.genanthro.com), a show that—just like ours—started out as a student project at Stanford University. Since the first episode of GenAnthro dropped in 2012, the show has evolved—and Mike has become a well-versed, well-acknowledged audio producer. Drawing from his year-long experience, participants of the IVAC seminar met up with Mike to discuss the chances but also the pitfalls about doing a podcast about the Anthropocene. Is there an alternative to the doom-or-gloom-narratives? Mike now operates a recording studio in Austin, Texas. He offers great advice for people who want to start a kick-ass podcast. For more info, visit his website (https://www.mikeosborne.org). Listen to Generation Anthropocene on Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/show/1E7NLTP9DDXvxYwyWOSSho?si=6c12d45c44894a06).

The Sound of Turning Waste into Energy

At the Spittelau incinerator in Vienna, thousands of tons of waste are collected to then being burnt, supplying more than 50.000 households with electricity. For our editor Florenz, the 126 meter high tower designed by one-of-a-kind architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser is at its core a product of the Anthropocene. Yet the somewhat funny-looking building reflects this in a smart way and could be a role model for future city planning. Climate Anxiety Among Teenagers

This podcast episode deals essentially with the topic of climate anxiety in teenagers and presents a variety of strategies to support them with this burden. In the last decade, climate change and environmental issues became increasingly important in young people’s lives: our planet and its well-being receive the attention of almost every member of Gen-Z. Although this is a profoundly positive development, this high degree of awareness and participation can also be quite threatening for their mental health, as, for instance, eco grief and climate anxiety became more and more common among teenagers. Consequently, as future teachers, it is beneficial to find out how educators can support young people regarding this issue and how one can help them to develop emotional strategies to cope with this burden. To get a deeper insight into this topic, this podcast episode includes interviews with two experts in this field of research, Leslie Davenport and Kailie Drumm, who present different answers and pieces of advice regarding these questions. Our interviewees Leslie Davenport is a therapist and author of four books, including “Emotional Resiliency in the Era of Climate Change”. Additionally, she has worked at Ground Zero on disaster mental health teams and is on faculty with the California Institute of Integral Studies. She works currently as a consultant to institutes recognizing the advantages of behavioral research for cultural shifts and policy change. Kailie Drumm analyzes in her research projects the intersection of adolescent psychological development, mental health, and the threat of climate change. Her projects include investigating the diverse ways in which teenagers experience concern about climate change and translating that into multidisciplinary education, with the critical aim of supporting the world’s youth. Additionally, Kailie is a registered nurse and teaches nursing at her local community college. The interviewers Marie is currently studying English and Spanish as a teaching degree in her fourth semester at the university of Bielefeld. Apart from getting to know new people and cultures, she loves dancing, reading and art. Maria is a graduate student in English and Spanish education. They are a passionate about teaching and community work. Credits Music for this episode comes from Nadsat Banda. Cool Streets of Vienna

In Austria, 11,5 Hectares of land are getting covered in concrete each day. That’s 20 football fields worth of soil. In consequence, during the summer cities like Vienna heat up like the hood of a car under the glaring August sun. City officials try to tackle the rising issues of heat and boiling concrete in installing... water sprinklers! that are scattered everywhere around town, spraying tiny amounts of water to cool down the air and refresh those who walk by. Florenz Gilly explores their sense and sound and reflects on whether that could be a model for the future.

Remains of the Teutoburg Forest and the Mighty Return of the Bark Beetle

The Teutoburg Forest is a low mountain range in North Rhine-Westphalia, more precisely in East Westphalia-Lippe, and stretches from Detmold via Bielefeld to Osnabrück. It is the green lung of the region and offers people a balance to life in the city. For some time now, however, the Teuto has been threatened by climate change, persistent drought, and dryness. These changing conditions are the ideal breeding ground for the bark beetle, which means that the trees can no longer produce resin and thus become rotten and porous. For this reason, many trees – especially spruces – must be cut down. The result is bare sections that change the landscape and the habitat. This episode of the podcast series “Anthropocene Soundscapes” deals with this problem and provides insights into an endangered region. “Digital Media Enable Us to Develop a Planetary Consciousness” (Interview With Eva Horn)

Our relation to nature has changed over time. Sometimes nature poses a threat. Sometimes people see nature as something to preserve. And sometimes nature is both: threat and treasure. This interview with university professor Eva Horn traces the routs of our contemporary understanding of nature and the specific problems that climate change and other effects of the Anthropocene are causing for our senses: too big or too small to hear, see, feel. With the help of digital tools, we might be able to leave behind this “clash of scales” and find a way to get in touch again with our surroundings. Eva Horn (https://www.germ.univie.ac.at/eva-horn/) is professor of German Studies at the University of Vienna. She is also the founder of the Vienna Anthropocene Network (https://anthropocene.univie.ac.at). Her Routledge introduction to the Anthropocene (https://www.routledge.com/The-Anthropocene-Key-Issues-for-the-Humanities/Horn-Bergthaller/p/book/9781138342477) served as basis of discussion in the IVAC seminar. What the Hell Is the Anthropocene Anyway?

Welcome to our new podcast Anthropocene Soundscapes! The only podcast about climate change and ecocriticism that really listens to the world’s bumping heartbeat. In this episode, project coordinator, Monika Raič, tells us about the trajectory of the IVAC network, the scope of the project’s research, and about the new geological epoch we live in: the Anthropocene. Anthropocene Soundscapes is a collaborative, bilingual podcast series by university students, broadcasting from four different cities on two different continents. As part of an international seminar in Romance Studies, the students explore the many ways in which humans have altered planet Earth. Monika Raič is a postdoctoral researcher at Berlin’s Humboldt University and the coordinator of the IVAC project “Anthropocene Landscapes” funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
