How We Build a Future Where Creativity and Sustainability Go Hand in Hand? with Sharon Julya | IBUKU
In this episode, we sit down with Sharon Julya, an architect at IBUKU Studio (https://ibuku.com/) in Bali, to explore the groundbreaking work done with bamboo by one of the world’s most innovative and sustainable architecture firms. Founded by Elora Hardy in 2010, IBUKU began as a personal experiment with bamboo’s potential and has since blossomed into a global movement that challenges conventional thinking about architecture, design, and materiality.
Sharon takes us through IBUKU's unique approach, where bamboo is not just a building material but a medium for creativity, cultural respect, and environmental consciousness. We delve into how the studio works with local communities, embraces sustainable practices, and redefines what it means to design for the future.
Note for the audience: This episode, recorded in person at IBUKU Studio in Bali, takes place barefoot and under the stunning bamboo roof of the studio itself.

Humility for Challenging Conventions with Jing Liu
This week our host Nurgul Yardim (https://www.instagram.com/nyardim/) talks with Jing Liu, visiting her in their office in Brooklyn, New York.
Jing Liu has been practising for more than 15 years, working on a wide range of projects both in the US and abroad. A native of China, Jing Liu received her education in China, Japan, the United Kingdom, and New Orleans.
Jing Liu co-founded SO-IL in 2008 with Florian Idenburg. Through building practice and interdisciplinary research projects, Jing has led SO–IL in the engagement with the socio-political issues of contemporary cities — in projects like the Artists Loft North Omaha and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library in Cleveland.
Jing leads all of the projects from concept to realization and considers carefully all aspects of design and construction — from the building’s presence in a community, down to the fasteners in a window. Her projects range from artistic collaborations with contemporary choreographers and visual artists to master plans and major public realm design.
Tune in to hear Jing’s story!
