[…] This column reviews the causes and risk factors associated with surgical ITI and highlights perioperative strategies to reduce patient harm. Causes of Surgical ITI Surgical ITI occurs through two mechanisms, radiant exposure and direct contact. A radiant exposure injury develops when a concentrated light field remains fixed over a small area long enough to transfer clinically meaningful heat to exposed tissue. A direct contact injury occurs when a hot cable, connector, or illuminated component comes into direct contact with a patient or rests on the drapes. Both mechanisms can occur silently and may go unrecognized. […]
