Bourgmeisterin Episode #64: British support of Luxembourg during WWII, part 1
𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝟭: 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁, 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲?! 🇱🇺😳
During WWII, this “peaceful little nation” got turned into a full-blown war zone by Nazi Germany. For nearly five years, it was less quiet countryside and more military chessboard with real humans♟️💥
Thousands of young Luxembourg men? Forced into the German Army.
Many never came back.
Around 1,300 Jews? Deported to Auschwitz and beyond.
Yeah… escalated quickly.
Then came 𝟭𝟬 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟵𝟰𝟰 – US troops roll in, people flood the streets, cheering like it’s the ultimate freedom party🥳🇺🇸
FINALLY, right? Plot twist: NOPE.
Just three months later, Hitler throws one last dramatic tantrum → hello, 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗹𝗴𝗲❄️💣
Winter hits, bombs fall, towns crumble, and 600 civilians lose their lives.
So yeah… Luxembourg may be small.
But WWII? It hit 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 big.

Most people in Luxembourg know these traditions.
Very few know 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘁, 𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆. In this conversation we explore the surprising social codes, historical roots, and cultural quirks behind rituals that many people celebrate every year without ever asking 𝘸𝘩𝘺.
