Women In PFAS - Ep. 2 - What's really in landfill leachate, and how can we manage PFAS?

Welcome back to the Women in PFAS podcast, the show where we highlight the experts, innovators, and leaders who are shaping the future of water and environmental resilience. Join host Amanda Berger as we dive into a topic that sits at the intersection of waste water and public health, PFAS, and landfill leachate. If you've been following the national conversation, you know that PFAS don't stay put. Every product we throw away has the potential to leach these, what we call forever chemicals into the liquid that forms at the bottom of landfills. And that leachate ultimately finds its way to wastewater treatment plants, or other disposal locations that were never designed for PFAS. Today we the science, the challenges, and the solutions: what's really in landfill leachate, and how are utilities and solid waste facilities adapting? We're joined by Dr. Johnsie Lang, leading real work, the laboratory, and on the ground, someone who brings deep technical insight and a practical operations driven perspective to one of the toughest environmental issues of our time.

How PFAS Moves from AFFF Areas to Groundwater

Join our host Craig Divine and our guest Charles Schaefer. You are listening to The PFAS Research and Remediation Podcast, produced and created by Arcadis with funding from the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program, ESTCP grant number ER-23 7692 through the United States Department of Defense. The Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) is the U.S. Department of Defense’s environmental technology demonstration and validation program. The program’s goal is to identify and assess innovative technologies that address DoD’s high-priority environmental requirements efficiently and cost-effectively. In this second season, we're focused on PFAS and interview a broad panel of experts who have each contributed to the growing knowledge base around remediating this emerging chemical of concern. Today we'll be speaking with Dr. Charles Schaefer, an environmental scientist and director of CDM Smith’s research lab in Bellevue, Washington. His work focuses on understanding and treating PFAS contamination in groundwater and soil. A leading researcher with over 50 scientific publications, he has led major SERDP and ESTCP projects and received multiple Project of the Year awards. Today, we’ll be talking with him about several projects exploring how PFAS move through the unsaturated zone in AFFF source areas and potentially migrate into groundwater.
