Parent and Children Round Table Featuring Michelle Udejiofor

WHAT THIS EPISODE IS ABOUT

Ever wondered what your kids actually think when you ask them to do chores? Or why they sometimes just shut down when you're talking to them? In this episode, we have young Mitchell and her dad to have an honest, unfiltered conversation about what children really need from their parents. It's raw, it's real, and it might just change how you approach your next "please go wash the dishes" moment.

THE BIG QUESTIONS & WHAT MITCHELL HAD TO SAY

"If you could teach every parent one thing, what would it be?"

Mitchell's answer was simple but powerful — let your kids breathe before loading them with tasks. She explained that when children are overstimulated (basically stressed, mentally drained, or just not in the right headspace), asking them to do chores is almost guaranteed to get you eye rolls and grumbling.

But when kids feel rested and motivated, they'll actually want to help. They'll do it willingly, maybe even cheerfully. It's all about timing.

Dad's honest response? He gets it, but he raised the real parenting struggle: "When exactly will my child do things without being told?" Because waiting for the perfect motivated moment doesn't always work when the dishes are piling up.

Mitchell kept it real: sometimes kids are randomly motivated and will just do things on their own. Other times? Yeah, they need a nudge. She also pointed out that kids understand consequences — if they skip chores today, they know it'll catch up with them tomorrow.

"What is one thing adults do that makes children feel unheard?"

This one hit different. Mitchell said that when kids are being hyper or talking fast or moving around a lot, parents tend to shut them down — telling them to sit still, be quiet, stay in one place. And while parents might just be trying to keep things calm, the message the child receives is: "I shouldn't talk. My voice doesn't matter."

That's a big deal. And it's something many of us probably do without even realising it.

KEY TAKEAWAYS FOR PARENTS

- Read the room before giving instructions. If your child looks drained or overwhelmed, give them a moment to recharge. You'll get better cooperation when they're in a better headspace.

- Motivation comes and goes — and that's normal. Kids won't always be self-starters. Sometimes they need reminders, and that's okay.

- Be careful how you calm them down. There's a difference between guiding energy and silencing a child. When we constantly shush or restrict them during high-energy moments, they may learn to stop expressing themselves altogether.

- Have these conversations with your kids. You might be surprised by how much they understand about themselves and what they need from you.

STANDOUT QUOTES

"Perhaps let them rest their mind even before asking them to do chores. Because usually, if they're very overstimulated and you ask them to do chores, they'll grumble, they will not feel like doing it." — Mitchell

"That's my challenge as a parent. When will there be the time when they will do it without being told?" — Mr. Chikudi Christian Udejo

"The parents might shut them trying to make them stay in one place and then they might feel like they shouldn't really be talking much." — Mitchell

Stay tuned — the conversation continues!
