Radioflash! Episode 24 – SMART Kill Explored

Armada explored the SMART Kill, or Spectrum Measures Against Radio Frequency Threats, concept back in November 2024. How has the concept developed during the intervening years?

Alasdair ‘Gilly’ Gilchrist, a former Royal Navy Electronic Warfare (EW) practitioner and an EW subject matter expert, has been developing his SMART Kill concept for several years. He was previously a guest on the Radioflash! podcast to discuss this subject in late 2024.

The global security picture, notably the ongoing war in Ukraine, and the recent conflict involving Israel and the United States, and the Islamic Republic of Iran, underscore SMART Kill’s necessity and relevance. In Armada’s latest Radioflash! episode we catch up with Mr. Gilchrist. We explore how SMART Kill has developed and his plans to continue SMART Kill’s evolution. A link to Mr. Gilchrist’s recent article on SMART Kill in the Journal of Electromagnetic Dominance can be found here. Radioflash! Episode 23 – Listen Closely

A new book provides a valuable, and much-needed, introduction to the fundamental principles of communications intelligence.

For some in the electronic warfare community, Communications Intelligence (COMINT) is the poor relation of its electronic intelligence counterpart. Nonetheless, COMINT has never been in more demand: The global growth of electronic communications, on and off the battlefield, make it a vital provider of intelligence to governments and militaries alike. Much of the COMINT world is shrouded in secrecy, the preserve of government spooks and their listening stations. Therefore, the work of the COMINT operative can be mysterious. Nonetheless, a new book entitled COMINT: All You Need to Know from electronic warfare expert Vito Pesare demystifies this fascinating discipline. It follows on from his work Electromagnetic Warfare: All You Need to Know, cowritten with Dr. Richard Rudd-Orthner that was published in 2024. In our latest Radioflash! podcast Mr. Pesare shares his motivations for writing this new work, the challenging aspects the book’s research and his thoughts on how the COMINT domain will evolve in the coming years. Copies of Mr. Pesare’s book can be ordered here.

Radioflash! Episode 22: Back in Business

Following a recent US federal shutdown, America’s government is reopening for business. What does this mean for electronic warfare provision in the country’s forthcoming defence budget?

The US government shutdown on 1st October after Congress failed to pass appropriations legislation for the 2026 fiscal year. As a result, over 900,000 government employees went on unpaid leave and a further two million worked without pay.

By 12th November, the Congressional standoff between Republicans and Democrats was coming to an end. The Senate passed a new funding bill which was signed into law by President Donald Trump. The end of the shutdown means the 2026 National Defence Authorisation Act (NDAA) can be passed into law. The NDAA covers defence spending for the 2026 fiscal year

What provisions the 2026 NDAA contain regarding US Electronic Warfare (EW) policy priorities? In our latest episode of Radioflash! we chat to Ken Miller, director of advocacy and outreach for the Association of Old Crows international electronic warfare organisation. Moreover, he is the host of the From the Crow’s Nest podcast which also examines electronic warfare and electromagnetic spectrum operations. Mr. Miller has previously been a Radioflash! guest having appeared on episode 17.
