In this episode of Art in Bloom, we are joined by Haley Mellin, a North American visual artist, land conservationist, and founder of Art into Acres. Mellin’s artistic practice is profoundly rooted in the natural world. Working outdoors in a seasonal studio, she creates observational paintings in gouache, a water-based medium, and drawings in charcoal, a plant-based carbon material. In 2017, she founded Art into Acres, an artist-run nonprofit dedicated to supporting permanent, large-scale land conservation on behalf of the arts community. Shirley Villavicencio Pizango is a renowned Peruvian visual artist currently based in Belgium. She grew up between the city of Lima and the small community of Santiago de Borja, in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest. Her work portrays scenes from everyday life in Ghent, where family members, friends, and strangers appear surrounded by lush vegetation and geometric forms that evoke Incan symbolism, expressed through a colourful, expressionist visual language with folkloric undertones.
