The Art and Craft of Formula 1 Photography - Paul-Henri Cahier
In this episode of Art in the Paddock, I sit down with one of the most respected photographers in Formula 1 to discuss his extraordinary career, his artistic vision, and the people and moments that shaped his life in motorsport. Photography was part of Paul-Henri's life from an early age. His father, Bernard Cahier, was one of the pioneers of F1 photography, and some of the sport's greatest legends, including Juan Manuel Fangio, were part of his childhood. But Paul-Henri went on to build a distinctive career of his own, developing a visual style defined by graphics, light, beauty, and a search for the perfect moment. This is a rare opportunity to get to know of the most legendary photographers in Formula 1. Paul-Henri and his father, Bernard Cahier, are considered an institution and are definitely part of Formula 1 history. Welcome to Art in the Paddock 🎙️ — Conversations with Formula 1 Photographers. The Man Who Changed F1 Photography - Bernard Asset
In this episode of Art in the Paddock, I sit down with Bernard Asset, one of the great names in the history of Formula 1 photography. Over more than four decades, Bernard photographed some of the greatest drivers in F1 history — but his approach was different. He was constantly looking for new ways to see and photograph the sport, creating images that became part of F1's visual history. We talk about his journey from his first Grand Prix at Silverstone, to photographing Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Michael Schumacher, Jacques Laffite, Nelson Piquet and many others. Bernard tells the stories behind some of his most memorable photographs — including how he ended up sitting behind Alain Prost on an F1 car, how he created his iconic photographs of Michael Schumacher at Ferrari, and how one of those images eventually brought him back to Maranello more than 20 years later to recreate the concept with Charles Leclerc. He also shares personal stories about Senna, including the moment the young Brazilian surprised Bernard by recognizing his previous work, and an incredibly emotional meeting between Senna and an elderly fan at Paul Ricard. We talk about creativity, instinct, developing the photographic eye, the evolution of F1 photography, and what happens to a photographer's archive and legacy after the cameras stop. This is a conversation about Formula 1, but above all, about the way one photographer learned to see it differently. Lydia Harper - How Parc Fermé Became a Motorsport Creative Agency
Becoming an F1 photographer was the goal. But once Lydia Harper got there, everything changed. In this episode, I speak with photographer and Parc Fermé founder Lydia Harper about her journey from entering motorsport with little industry experience to building one of the most interesting creative agencies working across F1 Academy, Formula E, WEC and Formula 1. We talk about photography, entrepreneurship, working with drivers, building a team, photographing major campaigns, and why the things Lydia thought would define success in Formula 1 weren't necessarily the things that made her happiest. We also explore the changing world of motorsport—from the growing presence of women throughout the paddock and the impact of F1 Academy, to social media, fashion and the changing relationship between photographers and audiences. Michael Potts: No Deal = No Money | The Reality of F1 Photography
In the first episode of Art in the Paddock, I sit down with F1 photographer Michael Potts to talk about what it really takes to build a career inside Formula One — beyond just taking great photos. Michael shares the story behind a defining moment early in his career at Baku 2018, where being in the right place at the right time led to getting the shot of the race — to find out he didn't know what to do with it. He learned some important business lessons in his first race. We talk about the realities of going freelance in Formula One, from burning through savings just to stay on the grid, to the importance of relationships, reputation, and simply “being there” if you want opportunities to come your way. This is an honest look at the pressure, uncertainty, and constant self-doubt that comes with working in one of the most competitive environments in photography — where even little mistakes during race weekends can make you feel like it's the end of your career. It is such a competitive environment! Topics include: • The Baku 2018 moment that changed everything • The harsh reality of freelance life in F1 • Why the business side matters as much as the photography • Managing clients, pressure, and long race weekends • Performance anxiety and competing with other photographers • The images that define a career — and the ones that almost don’t If you’ve ever wondered what life is really like behind the lens in Formula One, this is where the story begins.
