   Episode 66 - Jeanne Jaffe

Welcome Jeanne Jaffe. If you are in Miami Saturday night make sure you mosey on over to Dot Fiftyone Gallery because you are going to see a wall of Jeanne Jaffe’s sculptures come alive. The exhibit is the genius of the artist along with gallery owners Issac Perelman Mizrahi and Alfredo Guzmán. Trust me you have never seen anything like it. The entire exhibit, Betwixt and Between, by multidisciplinary artist Jeanne, explores the elusive space between sensation and language, memory and perception, object and image. It runs through January 20, 2027. Dot Fiftyone Gallery is located at 7275 NE 4th Ave, Miami. Monday to Friday, 12:00 pm – 6:30 pm, and Saturday, 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm. Those of us who know Jeanne love her work. She is best known for her installation, sculpture, and stop motion animation.  She told me that her work is influenced by an interest in language, literature, psychology, and history and explores how we construct identity, our world and our value systems. Jeanne is one of a kind. The number of sculptures, animations and paintings she turns out every year is unmatched by the creative community. I don’t know where she gets the energy. Always cheerful, she also shows up at many art related social functions. Jeanne has been a recipient of fellowships and grants from the South Florida Cultural Consortium, National Endowment for the Arts, the Gottlieb Foundation individual support grant, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts), Mid/ Atlantic Foundation, the Virginia A. Groot Foundation, and the Center for Emerging Artists in Philadelphia. Jaffe has had 20 solo exhibitions including most recently at Dot Fifty-One in Miami, L’Space Gallery in NYC and Spinello Projects in Miami. Her works have been domestically and internationally exhibited in museums such as the Mino Washi Museum in Mino, Japan, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art Museum in Philadelphia, the Woodmere Art Museum, James A. Michener Art Museum, Fuller Craft Museum, and the Hunterdon Art Museum. Her work is included in collections at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts Museum, at Alfred Ceramic Art Museum at Alfred University, the Sculpture Garden at Abington Art Center, and the Zimmerli Art Museum. She has participated in artist residencies at Anderson Ranch artist residency program in Colorado, Deeering Estate artist residency in Miami, Mino Artist Residency in Mino, Japan, Yaddo in New York state, Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, Women’s Studio Workshop, Rutgers Innovative Printmaking Workshop in New Jersey, and the Virginia Center for Creative Arts. Her work has been reviewed Art in America and Sculpture Magazine. Jaffe currently lives and works in South Florida.

   Episode 65 - Jen Clay

When you enter the world of Jen Clay, you leave your everyday reality behind—and return with a renewed sense of possibility. Her imaginative textile creations spark joy, curiosity, and the courage to explore opportunities you’ve put off for too long. You can experience that magic at Baker—Hall in Miami, where Jen presents “I’ve Seen a Bird Before,” an immersive quilted textile installation on view October 17 through November 21, 2026. A public reception takes place Saturday, October 17, from 6–9 p.m. Inspired by Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park and Daphne du Maurier’s The Birds, the exhibition brings together the wonder of Jen’s imagination and an unsettling sense that something unexpected is about to happen. As Baker—Hall describes it, the work developed during Jen’s residency at The Studios at MASS MoCA. Timed to the autumn bird migration, the exhibition invites visitors into a seemingly friendly grove of pink and purple trees inspired by invasive kudzu vines. Birds with puppet-like mouths inhabit this landscape. Their bright colors and soft forms appear playful, but their expressions hint at something more mysterious. Jen holds us in that moment of suspense—the quiet pause before everything might change. Next up is the appropriately titled “Faithful to the End,” a group exhibition at New York City’s historic Green-Wood Cemetery, running February 11 through May 16. I love Jen’s sense of adventure, but I’m not sure I have the guts to attend that one. Haha! She also has a solo exhibition, Premonition of Touch, curated by Harry Weil, opening February 26 at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. With Jen, there is always another world waiting to be discovered.

Episode 64 - Alejandro Garcia Contreras

Alejandro Garcia Contreras, the boundary-defying artist from Guadalajara, Mexico, has just opened an exhibition in Paris at Lefebvre & Fils, one of the city’s oldest and most distinguished galleries. The exhibition runs from September 10 through October 10, 2026, at 24 rue du Bac. The gallery describes Alejandro’s practice as an ongoing experimentation and dialogue between materials and technical processes. His work moves effortlessly among painting, sculpture, photography, video and the graphic arts. His list of accomplishments are a mile long—far too long for me to recite here. But visit DigiDame.com, where you can explore his remarkable career, along with photographs and videos of his work. What fascinates me most is the world Alejandro creates. Lefebvre & Fils describes his work as an invitation to explore the divine and the evil, the magical, the erotic and the feminine—even the taboo dimensions of our own unconscious. These are not passive works of art. They challenge you, seduce you and occasionally unsettle you. Alejandro’s art has received international recognition and has been exhibited throughout the United States, Europe, Latin America, Canada and Japan. In the U.S., his work has been shown by galleries including Swivel, Anat Ebgi , Friedman Benda and David Castillo, plus multiple art fairs. In Mexico, he has exhibited at major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Ex Colegio de San Ildefonso, the Ex Teresa Museum, the National Center for the Arts, the Chopo University Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Monterrey. The big news is that approximately 30 of Alejandro’s sculptures will be shown at Plataforma, Guadalajara’s premier museum, the last week of January during the city’s art week and one week before the big art exhibitions, Zona Maco and Material in Mexico City. I first met Alejandro six years ago in Guadalajara while traveling with Fountainhead Arts. I don’t consider myself an art aficionado in the traditional sense, but I do believe I have an instinct for recognizing a serious artist—someone with something urgent, original and deeply personal to express. I felt that immediately with Alejandro. A few years later, Eliot and I bought our first Garcia Contreras sculpture from Graham Wilson of Swivel Gallery in New York. In many ways, that piece tells the story of our own appetite for daring art—art that refuses to behave. There is so much energy in this sculpture that I sometimes feel as though I can actually hear it speaking to me. And the message is always the same - Live life on your own terms. There is something wonderfully reassuring about living with art that doesn’t merely decorate your home, but reflects who you are, challenges how you think, and—in our case—honors the choices you have made with your life. And that is exactly what Alejandro Garcia Contreras’s art does for us.
